  • Gilda de Abreu
    (Brasil, 1904-1979)



    Durante la guerra, sus padres emigraron a París, donde nació en 1904.

    A partir de 1914 su familia se instala definitivamente en Brasil. Desde los 18 años comenzó a estudiar canto con su propia madre (Nicia Silva de Abreu), llegando a interpretar óperas famosas en el Teatro Municipal de Río de Janeiro. En 1933 se estrenó en el teatro Recreio con la pieza A Canção Brasileira, de Luiz Iglesias y Miguel Santos. Conoce al cantor Vicente Celestino, con quien se casa en 1933 y forma la compañía que se presenta en todo el país.  En 1935 comienza su carrera en el cine con el filme Bonequinha de Seda.

    En 1946 debuta como directora y guionista en el filme O Ébrio, que se convirtió en estruendoso éxito de público, alcanzando su consagración. Hizo apenas  seis filmes, tres como actriz y tres como directora. En la década del 70 se dedicó a trabajar para el CANS, Cultura Artística Nicia Silva, entidad que fundó en homenaje a su madre.

    Falleció en Río de Janeiro, el 4 de Junio de 1979.


    Gilda de Abreu (1904-) was born in Paris, France and died in 1979. Her parents emigrated to Brazil during the First World War. In 1933, she debuted at the Recreio theater with the play A Canção Brasileira by Luiz Iglesias and  Miguel Santos. She met the singer Vicente Celestino, that become her husband in 1933 and together created a company that traveled around the whole country.  In 1935, she began her film career in the film Bonequinha de Seda.

    In 1946, she made her debut as director with the film O Ébrio, which became a resounding box office hit and established her reputation as director. Gilda de Abreu made only six films, three as actress and three as director. During the 1970´s she devoted herself to work with the cultural institution Cultura Artistica Nicia Silva (CANS), an entity she founded as an homage to her mother.

    She died on June 4, 1979 at the age 74 in Rio de Janeiro.
