Is a filmmaker and an actor. His films have focused on issues regarding identity and the family unit as an extension of a dysfunctional global interaction in a microscopic scale. His films usually play with the stereotypes labeled by the main stream media as iconic realities thrusting the stories into politically incorrect awareness. His work INSECTO and IV have won several awards and has been exhibited in the Habana International Film Festival, Cuba; Los Angeles International Film Festival, Los Angeles; San Diego Latino Film Festival, San Diego; Mex Artes Berlin, Germany, Strange new world – Art and design from Tijuana at the Museum of Contemporary Art in San Diego and at Santa Monica Museum of Art, Santa Monica, INSITE 2000 curated by Norma Iglesias just to name a few. He has worked as a Director, writer, actor, producer, editor, cinematographer and production assistant in several films besides his own like the Award Winning Documentary MAQUILOPOLIS directed and produced by Sergio de la Torre and Vickey Funari and The Garden of Eden directed by Maria Novaro where Ruiz worked as a Production Assistant. Ruiz also produced the award winning video BLUE for the music group “Perfect Circle” directed by Jospeh Perez. He is also co-founder of the collective “La Luciérnaga Colectivo Escénico” with Raquel Presa in Tijuana and the acting troupe “The Travellin’ Zoo” with Joseph J. Stephen and Wayne Shi in San Diego. Ruiz is also co-founder of the annual film festival RECORTOS48 in the city of Tijuana. Ruiz is part of the Visual Arts Department at the University of California San Diego as a media specialist for the masters program. Ruiz is working with the theme of kidnapping and its effects on a psychological, emotional, spiritual level combined with the cultural, economic, social and political phenomenom that it has become in site specific works as in the city of Tijuana, B.C. Mexico. His most recent work is the zombie satire THE Z’S and the drama ST.JACQUES premiered at the San Diego Latino Film Festival 2010 and showcased at the Short Film Corner Festival de Cannes 2010.
