El Festival de Cine Greater August Town invita a los cineastas caribeños a inscribir sus obras en el concurso de cortometrajes del evento, que se ha convertido en  uno de los festivales comunitarios de mayor desarrollo en la región. El evento se realiza con el auspicio del Proyecto de Cine Comunitario de la UWI (UWICFP) en la comunidad de August Town, Jamaica. La fecha de cierre de la convocatoria será el 29 de abril de 2016.

El GATFFEST, que se organiza  anualmente, es un espacio para incentivar la participación y expresión comunitaria. En su cuarto año continúa su trabajo para convertirse en una plataforma para la exhibición de los cineastas jamaicanos y caribeños, que sirva para estimular el desarrollo del talento y el trabajo de los cineastas de la región. La final del evento se celebrará en  junio, fecha en que se darán a conocer los ganadores en una ceremonia de premiación.

"El GATFFEST está en constante evolución", afirma el profesor Ian Boxill, profesor de estudios de dirección de empresa, en el Centro de Investigación sobre Turismo y Desarrollo. "Este año  hemos expandido nuestro alcance y introdujimos una competencia de escuelas, para mostrar y estimular el talento de los futuros cineastas.”

Por primera vez este año, el Festival se dirige a los estudiantes de las escuelas locales a través de la Competencia de Escuelas del GATFFEST. “Hemos comprobado que los estudiantes tienen la capacidad y creatividad suficiente para crear cortometrajes amenos y provocativos”, expresó Savannah Peridot, gerente de desarrollo de proyectos del UWICFP.

"Estamos trabajando con 25 institutos en Kingston y Montego Bay," informó Peridot. "Seleccionaremos 10 de los mejores filmes presentados, los cuales serán exhibidos en el Festival."

Participación internacional

El Festival ha expandido su alcance incluso más allá del Caribe, y su convocatoria está abierta a cineastas de todo el mundo. El año pasado se proyectaron 36 películas, procedentes de todos los continentes, excepto el africano.

El GATFFEST constituye una excelente oportunidad para que los cineastas de la región muestren su talento, creatividad, y cuenten sus historias y sea reconocido su talento y creatividad.

La fecha de cierre de la convocatoria será el 29 de abril de 2016.

Film-makers from across the Caribbean are being invited to submit their entries of short films, and be part of one of the Caribbean's fastest-growing community film festival - GATFFEST (The Greater August Town Film Festival), held under the auspices of the UWI Community Film Project (UWICFP).

GATFFEST, organised annually, is a catalyst for social commentary, expression and community participation. Now in its fourth year, it continues its quest to be a platform for showcasing Jamaican and Caribbean filmmakers, and to harness their talents and works. The grand finale will be in June, when the winners will be announced at an awards ceremony.

"GATFFEST is ever evolving," said Professor Ian Boxill, professor of management studies and director, Centre for Tourism and Policy Research. "This year, we have expanded the scope and introduced a school competition, to encourage and showcase talent of upcoming independent film-makers."

INTERNATIONAL ENTRIES 

The film festival has expanded its footprints across the shores, the entries are not restricted to a region, and GATFFEST welcomes international entries. Last year, 36 international and regional films were screened and films were received from every continent except Africa.

For the first time, this year's festival is targeting high school students with the GATFFEST School Competition.

"We have seen where these students have the capability and creativity to create entertaining and thought-provoking short films," said Savannah Peridot, business development manager, UWICFP.

"We are targeting 25 high schools in Kingston and Montego Bay," Peridot informed. "We will choose 10 of the best film submissions, which will be shown at the film festival."

Professor Boxill, who is the head of the GATTFEST, reaffirmed the commitment to make a positive impact on the communities, nurture, develop and encourage young and up-and-coming talent.

"This is a platform for Caribbean's budding and emerging film-makers," he said. "The objective is not only for them to get excellent visibility, but make meaning contribution to the communities through the medium," Professor Boxill said.

GATFFEST is an excellent opportunity for film-makers across the board to harness their talent, get a chance to interact with the best of Caribbean creative minds, tell their stories and be recognised for their talent and creativity.

The deadline for submission of entries is April 29, 2016.
