Este mes de mayo, el Festival de Cine África de Trinidad y Tobago (AFTT) celebrará cinco años de exhibiciones de películas del continente africano y de la diáspora.

De la mano de la directora del Fstival Asha Lovelace, el AFTT es una oportunidad para viajar a través del cine y explorar diversas vidas y experiencias desde Nigeria, pasando por Sudán, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Kenia hasta Sudáfrica y más. Hay una película para todos en la selección: desde comedia hasta drama, acción y romance.

"Este año, el festival se une a países de todo el mundo para conmemorar el Día de África, que se celebra el 25 de mayo, y la formación de la histórica Organización de la Unidad Africana (OUA) en 1963", dijo Lovelace. "AFTT 2019 celebra estos logros y destaca una amplia gama de películas africanas que emergen de un continente de 54 países, hogar de diferentes culturas que han impactado en todas las partes del mundo", agregó.

En la Noche de Apertura de la Gala, el lunes 20 de mayo en el Auditorio del Banco Central, el AFTT 2019 presentará The Burial of Kojo, del reconocido director, músico y miembro de TED, Blitz the Ambassador; nacido en Ghana y residente en Nueva York, quien estará también en la ceremonia de inauguración.

El Festival, que se extenderá por una semana, también presentará un Día de Películas Sudafricanas, para celebrar el Día de África, el 25 de mayo, en colaboración con el Alto Comisionado de Sudáfrica en Trinidad y Tobago.

El AFTT Jr., dedicado a los niños, adolescentes y toda la familia, ha ido creciendo, e incluye proyecciones todas las mañanas, del 23 al 26 de mayo, en el Teatro Little Carib, la sede principal del Festival.

El Festival cerrará el domingo 26 de mayo con My Friend Fela, que ofrece una visión única de la vida y obra del icónico músico y activista Fela Kuti, dirigida por el realizador y biógrafo oficial de Fela, el brasileño Joel Zito Araujo, quien estará en Trinidad para presentar su película y dirigir un taller sobre cine documental el viernes 24 de mayo, de 1.00 a 3.00 p. m.

El AFTT siempre lleva, además, sus películas a la comunidad y organiza noches de exhibiciones gratuitas para toda lala familia en la cancha de baloncesto en Never Dirty, Morvant, y la cancha de voleibol  de Arima, los días 10, 17 y 18 de mayo, respectivamente.

This May, Africa Film T&T (AFTT) is set to celebrate five years of showcasing films from the African continent and diaspora.

Led by festival director Asha Lovelace, AFTT is an opportunity to travel through film and explore diverse lives and experiences from Nigeria, Sudan, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Kenya, South Africa, and beyond. There’s a movie for everyone in the line-up: from comedy to drama, action and romance.

“This year, the festival joins countries around the world in commemorating Africa Day, on May 25, and the formation of the historic Organisation of African Unity (OAU) in 1963,” said Lovelace. “AFTT 2019 celebrates these achievements and highlights a wide range of African films emerging from a continent of 54 countries - home to different cultures that have impacted every part of the globe,” she added.

At the Gala Opening Night, on Monday, May 20 at The Central Bank Auditorium, AFTT 2019 will present, 'The Burial of Kojo' by award-winning director, musician and TED Fellow, Blitz the Ambassador; born in Ghana and based in New York. He will also be at the opening.

The week-long festival will also present A day of South African films, on Africa Day, May 25, in collaboration with the South African High Commission of Trinidad and Tobago.

For children, teens and families, AFTT Jr. has grown to include screenings every morning from May 23-26, at the Little Carib Theatre, the main venue of the festival.

The festival closes on Sunday, May 26 with 'My Friend Fela' – a unique picture of the iconic musician and activist Fela Kuti, by Brazilian director and Fela’s official biographer, Joel Zito Araujo, who will be in Trinidad to present the film and conduct a workshop on documentary filmmaking on Friday May 24, 1-3pm.

AFTT always takes film to the community and will stage free family movie nights, at the basketball court, in Never Dirty, Morvant, the Brian Lara Promenade, and Arima’s netball court, on May 10, 17 and 18, respectively.
