El cortometraje de Dominica Oseyi and the Masqueraders, dirigido por Alwin Bully, fue seleccionado para la noche de apertura del Festival Internacional de Cine Caribbean Tales de Toronto, Canadá, que se celebra del 4 al 20 de septiembre de 2019. La película, que tuvo su estreno en el Festival de Cine de Trinidad y Tobago (TTFF), fue calurosamente recibida por el público de su país; por lo que fue seleccionada para ser exhibida nuevamente en la recién concluida edición 14 del TTFF CARIFESTA.

La conmovedora historia de entrada a la edad adulta toca varios temas, como la preservación del patrimonio cultural; el arte del carnaval y la tradición de las máscaras; el tema de los padres solteros; los secretos familiares y la transmisión de tradiciones rurales de generación en generación.

Con la poderosa voz de Dennis Joseph como narrador; y las actuaciones excelentes de Pacquette Langlais, de 11 años, en el rol principal y la aclamada actriz jamaicana Leonie Forbes, como la abuela de Oseyi; bajo la sensible dirección de Alwin Bully

Oseyi and the Masqueraders participó también en el CARIFESTA (del 16 al 26 de agosto de 2019) y ahora en el Festival Internacional de Cine de Caribbean Tales en Toronto, y seguramente estará presente en muchos otros festivales de Cine del Caribe.

Al ser interrogado sobre cómo se sentía con el desempeño reciente de su película, Alwin Bully dijo: “Nos sentimos honrados por estas dos grandes muestras de agradecimiento de los organizadores de estos dos festivales. Permitir que se repita una exhibición en dos eventos de un mismo festival de cine es muy raro, y ser incluido en el Programa de la noche de apertura de la edición Carifiesta del Festival de cine de Trinidad y Tobago  significa un claro respaldo del Comité de Selección del evento”.

Bully agregó: “Estamos agradecidos por este aliento y nos sentimos honrados por la gran generosidad que han demostrado. Espero que nuestros éxitos en estos y otros festivales hagan mucho para alentar a los cineastas dominiquenses ir más allá de los videos musicales y comerciales y comenzar a contar nuestras historias al mundo”.

Alwin Bully’s Short Film Oseyi and the Masqueraders has been selected for screening on the Opening Night Programme of Caribbean Tales International Film Festival in Toronto, Canada on Wednesday September 4, 2019.

The film which premiered at the Trinidad and Tobago Film Festival (TTFF) last September was warmly received by Trinidadian audiences, so much so, as to have been put back on the TTFF for the second time as part of the CARIFESTA film programme.

The heartwarming coming of age story touches on several themes such as preservation of the cultural heritage; carnival art forms and masking traditions; single parenting; family secrets, and the passing on of rural traditions from one generation to the next.  With the strong voice of Dennis Joseph as narrator; sterling performances by 11 year old Pacquette Langlais in the title role and internationally acclaimed Jamaican actress Leonie Forbes, as Oseyi’s grandmother; and under the sensitive direction of Alwin Bully; Oseyi and the Masqueraders is certainly not to be missed this year at CARIFESTA (August 16-26, 2019) and at Caribbean Tales International Film Festival in Toronto or at many of the up-coming Caribbean Film Festivals .

When asked how he felt about these recent developments with the film, Director Alwin Bully said, “We are most honored by these two great tokens of appreciation by the organizers of these two festivals.  To be allowed a repeat performance at a film festival is very rare and to be included on the Opening Night Program of another is a clear endorsement by that Festival’s Selection Committee.”

Bully continued, “We are grateful for this kind of encouragement and are humbled by this open generosity.  It is my hope that our successes at these and other festivals will do much to encourage Dominican filmmakers to go beyond music videos and commercials and start telling our stories to the world.”
