Rafael Rosal
(Guatemala, 1960)
Nace en Guatemala en 1960. Graduado de la Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión (EICTV), de Cuba, en 1991, catedrático de edición en el Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfica de México (1992-1993), fue coproductor con TV UNAM del documental sobre refugiados guatemaltecos en el sureste mexicano, Bajo el reino de Xibalbá (1992), y director y redactor del semanario informativo internacional The Return of the Guatemalan Refugees (1993-1995). Dirige el documental sobre mujeres ex guerrilleras If blue doesn’t exist, proyecto de la Universidad Estatal de San Diego, California (1996-97).
Fundador y director del Festival Ícaro de Cine y Vídeo Centroamericano en 1998, cargo que mantiene hasta el presente. Fundador y director del Centro Cultural Casa Comal, desde el 2000 hasta la actualidad. Ganador de la beca para Investigación en Humanidades de la Fundación Rockefeller, con el proyecto documental sobre pandillas juveniles (maras) Juntos somos el Power (2000). En 2001, Casa Comal firma contrato de cooperación con la Agencia Noruega para el Desarrollo (NORAD). Productor ejecutivo y Asistente de Dirección en la realización de la película La casa de enfrente (2003). En este mismo año es nombrado miembro del Consejo de la Fundación del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano (FNCL). En 2005, dirige su ópera prima Las Cruces… poblado próximo.
Rafael Rosal was born in Guatemala in 1960. He graduated from the International Film and Television School (EICTV), in Cuba, in 1991, he was a professor of editing at the Centre for Film Training of Mexico (Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfica de México) from 1992 to1993; he co-produced with TV UNAM the documentary about Guatemalan refugees in the Mexican southeast area, Bajo el reino de Xibalbá (1992), and was also director and writer of the international weekly newspaper “The Return of the Guatemalan Refugees” (1993-1995). He directed the documentary about ex-guerrilla female fighters “If blue doesn’t exist”, a project with the State University of San Diego, California (1996-97).
He was the founder and director of the Ícaro Festival of Central American film and video in 1998, position he still holds at present. He has been the founder and director of the Cultural Centre Casa Comal, from 2000 to the present. He won the scholarship of the Rockefeller foundation for research on humanities with the project documentary about juvenile gangs (maras) Juntos somos el Power (2000). In 2001, Casa Comal signed cooperation with the Norwegian Agency for development (NORAD).
In 2002, they signed a cooperation contract with Fredskorpset, for the development of a work exchange between the International Film and TelevisionSchool of Cuba and Casa Comal. In 2003, Casa Comal signs a cooperation agreement with the Dutch Agency Hivos (Agencia Holandesa Hivos) to strengthen the work on training, production and artistic broadcasting. He was executive producer and assistant to the director in the film La casa de enfrente (2003). In this same year he is appointed member of the council of the of the New Latin American Cinema Foundation (FNCL). In 2005, he directed his first work Las Cruces… poblado próximo.
