Alejandro González Iñárritu
(México, 1963)
Nace en el Distrito Federal, el 15 de agosto de 1963. Comienza su carrera en el mundo del espectáculo trabajando como DJ en la estación de radio WFM, en un programa de tres horas de duración. En 1986, comenzó a estudiar cinematografía, y cuatro años más tarde ya estaba a cargo de la producción publicitaria de Televisa, la cadena de televisión más grande de México.
Crea su propia casa de producción de cine, Zeta Films, en 1991, y al año siguiente viaja a Estados Unidos a estudiar dirección. En 1995 realiza un cortometraje para Televisa, con Miguel Bosé como actor, y dos años después es premiada su campaña publicitaria para WFM. Al igual que otros directores jóvenes brasileños, mexicanos y cubanos, la publicidad y la televisión fueron los terrenos en los cuales probó armas antes de llegar al cine.
En 2000, fue un gran éxito a nivel de público, prensa y festivales su primer largometraje, Amores perros, una película que ha recibido varios premios en festivales internacionales, como el galardón al Mejor Largometraje de la Semana de la Crítica del Festival de Cannes, y una nominación al Oscar.
Iñárritu fue incluido entre los mejores directores del mundo, junto con Wim Wenders y Ken Loach, entre otros, para el proyecto cinematográfico titulado 11'09''01, dedicado a explicar la realidad y el horror de los atentados terroristas del World Trade Center de New York.
En Hollywood dirigió su segunda obra en grande, 21 gramos, con actores de la talla y el prestigio de Sean Penn, Benicio del Toro y Charlotte Gainsbourg. Gracias a esta cinta, Sean Penn recibió el premio a la mejor actuación en el Festival de Cine de Venecia. Además, el filme se convirtió en una de las películas preferidas de la temporada en París.
En el Festival de Cannes 2006 presenta Babel, en donde obtuvo el premio al mejor director. También escrita por Arriaga, que consta de cuatro historias ambientadas en Marruecos, Túnez, la frontera entre Estados Unidos y México y Japón. El filme se estrenó comercialmente en octubre de 2006 y cuenta con la interpretación de Gael García Bernal, Cate Blanchett, Brad Pitt y Koji Yaku.
He was born in the Federal District, on August 15th, 1963. He began his career in show business working as DJ for the radio station WFM, in a three hour long program. In 1986, he began his film studies, and four years later he was already in charge of the advertising production of Televisa, the biggest Mexican television network.
He creates his own cinema production house Zeta Films, in 1991, and the following year he travels to the United States to study direction. In 1995 he made a short film for Televisa, with Miguel Bosé as actor, and two years later his advertising campaign for WFM is prized. The same as in the case of other young directors from Brazil, Mexico and Cuba, advertising and television were the media he ventured into before he started his career as filmmaker.
In 2000, his first feature film, Amores perros, was a success with the public, the press and the festivals. This film has won several prizes at international festivals, such as the award to the best feature film given by the Semaine de la Critique of the Cannes Festival and a nomination to the Oscar.
Iñárritu was included among the best directors worldwide, together with Wim Wenders and Ken Loach, among others, for the cinematographic project dedicated to explain the reality and horror of the terrorist attack to the World Trade Centre of New York, titled 11'09''01.
In Hollywood he directed his second remarkable work, 21 gramos, with actors of class and prestige such as Sean Penn, Benicio del Toro and Charlotte Gainsbourg. Thanks to this film, Sean Penn won the prize to best actor at the Venice Film Festival. Besides, the film became one of the favourite ones of the period in Paris.
In the Cannes Festival of 2006 he presents Babel, and won the prize to best director. The film is also written by Arriaga, and tells four stories with settings in Morocco, Tunisia, the USA-Mexican border and Japan. The commercial premier of the film occurred in October 2006 and some of the leading characters are played by Gael García Bernal, Cate Blanchett, Brad Pitt and Koji Yaku.
