    Pocho Álvarez (Riobamba, Ecuador, 1953) es un realizador ecuatoriano independiente de cine y vídeo. Tiene una amplia filmografía como director, productor, fotógrafo y guionista. Desde 1977 ha realizado más de veinte películas entre cortos, mediometrajes y largos. A lo largo de su fructífera carrera ha recibido varias distinciones.

    Sus documentales plasman un momento importante del cine ecuatoriano, una época y una épica de culturas y de gentes como elemento fundamental en este autor. Cine de agitación, que no solo provoca a una toma de conciencia, sino que logra "poner todo en trance" para comunicar y promover la esperanza.

    Gran parte de su obra documental ha reflejado las temáticas sociales más urgentes de su país. Nosotros, una historia (1984), ofrece el testimonio de obreros sobrevivientes de la famosa Huelga de Guayaquil, el 15 de Noviembre de 1922. Los derechos de niños y adolescentes, narrados estéticamente por un querido mimo, desaparecido en las calles de Quito: José Luis Belandia, es el tema de Ecuador niñez y adolescencia, una geografía humana quebrada en sus derechos (2006 ). Forajido el legado de abril (2005) muestra la memoria de los forajidos, y The green deal in Cambodia y When the floods Receds (2004), más allá de sus fronteras, describe el indescriptible milagro del agua en Cambodia.  Toxico texaco (2007), constituye una denuncia por la devastación, mientras que Ale y Dumas uno es dos y dos es uno (2008) , es la  tierna historia de un viejo y una joven poetas quienes componen décimas y recorren con ellas el litoral montubio, regalando su sabiduría.

    A cielo abierto, derechos minados (2009), registra la reacción de los habitantes de las comunidades de Imbabura, Zamora Chinchipe y otras  provincias ecuatorianas bajo la zona de influencia minera. Los testimonios de los dirigentes y los propios protagonistas cuentan los hechos que conforman el eje de esta historia.


    Pocho Álvarez, born in Riobamba, Ecuador, is an independent film and video director. He has a large filmography as director, producer, photographer and screenwriter. Since 1977 he has made more than twenty films among shorts, medium length and feature films. Along his prolific career he has received different awards.

    His documentaries show an important moment of Ecuadorian cinema, expression of a period and an epic of cultures and people as the main element of this author’s work. A mobilizing cinema that, not only, causes awareness, but that also manages to put every thing in a critical situation in order to communicate and promote hope.

    Great part of his documentary work has reflected the most urgent social issues of his country. Nosotros una historia (1984), offers the testimony of the workers who survived  of the famous strike, of Guayaquil on November 15, 1922. The children and teenager rights, aesthetically narrated by a lovely mime who was kidnapped on the Quito streets: Jose luis Belandia, is the theme of Ecuador childhood, adolescence, a human geography transgressed  in its rights (2006). Forajido el legado de Abril (2005) shows the outlaws´ memories, and The green deal in Cambodiaand and When the floods receds (2004), made beyond the Ecuadorian context, describes the indefinable miracle of  water in Cambodia. Toxico Texaco (2007) denounces the environment devastation. Ale y Dumas uno es dos y dos es uno (2008), is a tender story about an old man and a young girl who compose poems that they take with them and recite in his travel along the Montubio coast, offering in this way its wisdom to the people.
            
    A cielo abierto, derechos minados (2009), registers the reaction of the inhabitant the communities of Imbabura, Zamora, Chinchipe and others Ecuadorian provinces under the influence of mining. The testimonies of the leaders and the protagonists tell the facts that are at the center of this story.
