Marco Bechis
(Chile, 1955)
Nació en Santiago de Chile, y se crió en São Paulo y Argentina. Mientras ejercía como maestro primario en Buenos Aires, fue secuestrado y torturado por la dictadura militar argentina en abril de 1977, siendo deportado a Italia. Desde hace dos décadas vive y trabaja en Milán.
Debuta en el cine de ficción con Alambrado (1991), filmado en la Patagonia, con el que obtuvo el Tercer Premio Coral en el 15 Festival Internacional de Cine Latinoamericano de La Habana, y galardones en Madrid, Bruselas y el Sundance Film Festival. Antes había dirigido cuatro cortometrajes realizados en el período 1982-1988; por Absent (1984), recibió el máximo galardón en el concurso Videocarta del Festival de Salsomaggiore.
Tras retornar al documental con su largometraje Luca´s Film (1996), dirigió Garage Olimpo (1999), a partir de un guión inspirado en sus experiencias personales durante la última dictadura militar argentina y por el que obtuvo numerosas distinciones, entre ellas el Primer Premio Coral en el 21 Festival Internacional del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano de La Habana, Mejor Película en los Festivales de Huelva, Tesalónica (Grecia) y Messina, entre otros. Garage Olimpo relata la historia de María, una joven alfabetizadora de 19 años, secuestrada por motivos políticos, y su encuentro con un pretendiente convertido repentinamente en su torturador.
Marco Bechis was born in Santiago, Chile, but grew up in São Paulo, Brazil and in Argentina. At the times when he worked as elementary school teacher, he was kidnapped and tortured by the Argentine military dictatorship in April 1977, as a result of what he was deported to Italy, there he lives and work in the city of Milan.
His debut in the narrative film was Alambrado (1991), shot in the Patagonia, which won the Third Coral award at the 15th edition of the International Festival of the New Latin American Cinema of Havana (Festival Internacional de Cine Latinoamericano de La Habana), and recognitions in Madrid, Brussels and the Sundance Film Festival. Before his first narrative film, he had directed four short films made in the period between 1982 and 1988, thank to his film Absent (1984), he received the main award at the Videocarta contest of the Salsomaggiore Festival.
After a comeback to the documentary with the feature film Luca´s Film (1996), he directed Garage Olimpo (1999), based on a screenplay inspired in his own personal experiences during the last Argentine military dictatorship, a film that received many international awards, such as First Coral Award at the 21st edition of the International Festival of the New Latin American Cinema of Havana, Best Film in the festivals of Huelva, Thessalonique and Messina, among many others. Garage Olimpo tells the story of María, a 19 years old teacher of basic literacy, kidnapped for political reasons and her meeting with a suitor suddenly turn into her torturer.
