    A los tres años de edad, su familia se muda de la ciudad de Puebla a la capital. Cuando niño, acude en compañía de su madre y hermanos al auto cinema Satélite. Estudia la carrera de CTI en la UIA (1975-1979) con la especialidad en cine. Al terminar la licenciatura ingresa a Visión Promotora, empresa turística donde se encarga del material publicitario durante año y medio. Continúa como productor y redactor en la agencia de publicidad Ideas y Hechos/Grey; después de dos años, establece Altafilme cinevideo, su primera productora, a la que sigue Nexus Producciones. Asiste a Julián Pastor en Orinoco, 1984; Alberto Bojórquez en Robachicos, 1985; y colabora con Alfredo Gurrola para la UTEC, en el programa televisivo Los libaneses de Yucatán, en 1984, organismo en el que dirige el capítulo Los chinos del DF.

    Entre 1995 y 2001 es director cinematográfico asociado en Tiempo y Tono Producciones. Paralelamente produce cortometrajes y comerciales, cuyo número en el 2001 se acerca a los 300. En 1998 publica el poemario Para construir un epitafio, como parte de la Colección Tejedores, editada por el Instituto Michoacano de Cultura. Dirige el cortometraje Niños (2000) para la segunda serie de Diminutos del Calvario, título bajo el cual se integran diez cortos de un minuto, coproducción de Juan Carlos Rulfo y Valentina Leduc con Cristina Faesler, para el libro ABCDF, proyecto que comprende fotografías, textos e imágenes en CD-ROM de la Ciudad de México.

    Como preámbulo a su ópera prima, realiza el corto Apuntes para una visual de la calle (2000), con una duración de ocho minutos, material con el que promueve el financiamiento de su primer largometraje De la calle (2001), dramática y cruda historia de los niños de la calle, adaptación al cine de la guionista Marina Stavenhaguen, basada en la obra homónima del dramaturgo Jesús González Dávila, que obtiene en la XVI Muestra de Cine de Guadalajara 2001, el Mayahuel de Oro otorgado por el Jurado Oficial a la Mejor Película, "por abordar de una forma innovadora y original una lacerante realidad conjuntando acertadamente los medios expresivos del arte cinematográfico".

    Tort recibe ese mismo año en el Festival de San Sebastián, España, en la Sección Zabaltegui, el premio al Mejor Nuevo Director. En 2002 De la calle se lleva El Heraldo a la Mejor Ópera Prima, y cinco Diosas de Plata por: Mejor Película, Director, Guión, Actor y Edición. En la XLIV entrega del Ariel (2002) la cinta es nominada en 19 categorías, de las cuales recibe los Arieles por: Mejor Ópera Prima, Guión Adaptado, Escenografía, Ambientación, Diseño de Arte, Vestuario, Maquillaje, Actor de Cuadro (Mario Zaragoza), Actriz de Cuadro (Cristina Michaus), Coactuación Femenina (Vanessa Bauche), y Mejor Actriz (Maya Zapata). Con Marina Stavenhaguen crea la compañía productora La Rabia Films, sello bajo el cual realiza en video el documental-largometraje sobre la vida del guerrillero Lucio Cabañas, trabajo que funge como base para una ficción que se desarrollará en el contexto de la guerra sucia en México.

    Su filme más destacado, De la calle, fue filmado en el Centro Histórico de la Ciudad de México, integra en su reparto talentosos y jóvenes actores protagonistas, como Maya Zapata y Luis Fernando Peña, así como verdaderos niños de la calle que habitan en las coladeras. De la calle, producida por Tiempo y Tono Films, el IMCINE y el FOPROCINE, con un costo de 1300 000 dólares, es distribuida por Videocine y Nuvisión. De la calle participa en 2001 en las primeras Jornadas de Cine Mexicano en Los Ángeles, Ca., organizadas por el cineasta Alejandro Pelayo en calidad de agregado cultural, en el Festival Internacional del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano de La Habana, Cuba, los festivales de Chicago, Corea y Barcelona, recorrido que continúa en el 2002 en Sundance, Rotterdam, Brasil y el Giffoni Film Festival, Italia, dedicado al público infantil y adolescente.




    Gerardo Tort (1958-) moved with his family out from Puebla to the Capital City of Mexico at the age of three. As a boy, he used to go with his mother and siblings to the Satélite drive-in movie theater. He studied the university course CTI at the UIA (1975-1979) and he majored in films. After he got his university degree, he started working for Visión Promotora, a tourist enterprise where he was responsible for the advertising materials during a year and a half. Later, he also worked as producer and writer for the advertising agency Ideas y Hechos/Grey; after that he established Altafilme cinevideo, his first production company, which was followed by Nexus Producciones. He worked as assistant to Julián Pastor in Orinoco, 1984; Alberto Bojórquez in Robachicos, 1985; and collaborated with Alfredo Gurrola for UTEC, in the television program Los libaneses de Yucatán in 1984, organization in which he directed the episode Los chinos del DF

    From 1995 and 2001, he was associate director in Tiempo y Tono Productions. Simultaneously, he produced short films and commercials; by the year 2001, he had made nearly 300 of them. In 1998, he published the poetry book Para construir un epitafio, part of the collection Tejedores, edited by the Instituto Michuacan Culture Institute (Instituto Michoacano de Cultura). Later, he directed the short film Niños (2000) for the second series of Diminutos Del Calvario, the title of a group of 10 one minute short films, a co-production of Juan Carlos Rulfo and Valentina Leduc with  Cristina Faesler, for the book ABCDF, a project that comprises photographs, texts and images in CD-ROM of Mexico City.

    As a preamble to his first work, he made the eight minute short film Apuntes para una visual de la calle, 2000, with this material he promoted the financing for his first feature film De la calle (2001), a dramatic and brutal story of street children, with an screen adaptation by scriptwriter Marina Stavenhaguen, based on the homonymous work of playwright Jesús González Dávila. This film was winner of the Mayahuel de Oro (Golden  Mayahuel) at the 16th Film Showcase of Guadalajara in 2001, granted by the Official Jury to the Best Film "for approaching in an innovative and original way a wounding reality with a precise combination of the expressive means of  cinematic art".

    Tort received also that year the prize for Best First Work at the Section Zabaltegui of the San Sebastián Festival, Spain. In 2002, De la calle won El Heraldo award for Best First Work and also five Diosas de Plata award for: Best Film, Director, Screenplay, Actor and Editing. At the 44th Ariel Awards edition in 2002, the film was nominated in 19 categories, out of which it won the Arieles for: Best First Work, Adapted Screenplay, Scenography, Setting, Art design, Costume, Make up, Supporting actor (Mario Zaragoza), Supporting actress (Cristina Michaus), Female co-acting  (Vanessa Bauche), and Best Actress (Maya Zapata).

    With Marina Stavenhaguen he founded the production company La Rabia Films, with this company he made in video format the documentary feature film about the life of guerrilla fighter Lucio Cabañas, a work that constituted the foundation for a fiction developed in the context of the dirty war in Mexico.

    His most remarkable movie De la calle, was filmed in the Historical Centre of Mexico City, talented artists and young actors and actresses such as Maya Zapata and Luis Fernando Peña starred together as well as the real street children who live in the slums. De la calle, produced by Tiempo y Tono Films, the IMCINE and the FOPROCINE, with a cost of 1 300 000 dollars, was distributed by Videocine and Nuvisión. The film participated in 2001, in the first events of Mexican Cinema in Los Ángeles, California, organized by filmmaker Alejandro Pelayo in his role as cultural attaché at the International Festival of the New Latin American Cinema of Havana, and at the Chicago, Korea and Barcelona film festivals, these presentations continued in 2002 at Sundance, Rotterdam, Brazil and the Giffoni Film Festival, Italy, dedicated to children and adolescents.
