Ciro Guerra (1981-) was born in Rio Oro, Colombia. He studied film and television at the Universidad Nacional de Colombian (Colombian National University). He directed the short films Silencio (1998) and Alma (2000) and the documentary Documental siniestro: Jairo Pinilla Colombian filmmaker (1999) and the animated short film Intento (2001), which received a great number of awards at different film festivals.

With his feature film La sombra del caminante (2004) won the award Cine en Construccion (work in progress) at the San Sebastian Film Festival, and took part in the first work sections of the main film festivals specialized in Spanish-speaking cinema. The film tells the story of Mañe, who goes through a very difficult economic situation, because he has lost one of his legs, which makes impossible for him to get a job. As he goes along the streets trying to survive he knows an unusual person who carries out people in his back: a silletero (“chairer”). Between the two men develops a friendship that will help to improve their lives.

Los viajes del viento is his second narrative feature film, which took more than four years to be completed. It was a logistical feat, with shoots in 84 locations, many of which could be reached only by mule, canoe or truck. One scene at a mountaintop hut involved 20 mules carrying equipment and a crew of 40 along with them. None of the actors were professional- for six months; those in charge of casting scoured the country's north for talent. The feature won an award in the section Un Certain Regard of the Cannes Film Festival.
