Using the wedding in Caracas of a young, working-class couple, director Thaelman Urgelles relies on flashbacks to bring out the social and political problems assailing Venezuela in this period (1981-1982) just before the Bolívar (the Venezuelan currency) was to plunge into an unprecedented devaluation that left their petroleum profits in the dirt and the economy in shambles. As the crunch begins to be felt everywhere, scenes of police brutality, demonstrations, corrupt labor union leaders, and other assorted ills are brought to the fore, intermixed with love scenes that remind the viewer that weddings are not just for political flashbacks.
