Marcelo Gomes
(Brasil, 1962)
Estudió periodismo, en la especialidad de televisión. En 1991, ganó una beca para estudiar cine en la Universidad de Bristol, Inglaterra. Dos años después volvió a Brasil y fundó la productora Parabólica Brasil, donde realizó cortometrajes y videos junto a Adelina Pontual y Cláudio Assis.
En 1995, dirigó el corto Maracatu, maracatus, que obtuvo los premios de mejor filme, actor y sonido en el Festival de Brasília. Después realizó, con Beto Normal, el corto Clandestina felicidade (1998), que recibió un premio por actuación femenina y el de la crítica en el Festival de Gramado, mejor fotografía y edición en Recife, entre otros. En 2002, fue coguionista de Madame Satã, de Karim Aïnouz. Nuevamente junto a Karim Aïnouz, creó el video-instalación Ah se tudo fosse sempre assim (2004), para la Bienal de São Paulo.En 2005, lanzó su primer largometraje, Cinema, aspirinas e urubus, seleccionado para la muestra Una Cierta Mirada, del Festival de Cannes, donde fue muy bien recibido y ganó el premio de Educación Nacional, concedido por el Ministerio de Educación de Francia. En Brasil, el filme se estrenó en el Festival de Río, donde ganó el premio especial del jurado y el de mejor actor. Marcelo también escribió el guión de Deserto feliz, de Paulo Caldas.
Marcelo Gomes (1962) studied journalism in the specialization of television. In 1991, he won a scholarship to study film at the Bristol University, England. Two years later he came back to Brazil and founded the production company Parabólica Brasil, where he made short films and videos together with Adelina Pontual and Cláudio Assis. In 1995, he directed the short film Maracatu, maracatus, that won the awards of Best Film, actor and sound at the Brasília Film Festival. After it he made with Beto Normal, the short Clandestina felicidade (1998), which received an award for best actress and the one of the critics at the Gramado Film Festival; Best Cinematography and edition at Recife, among others. In 2002, he was co-writer of Madame Satã by Karim Aïnouz. In 2004, again with Karim Aïnouz, he created the video-installation Ah se tudo fosse sempre assimfor for the São Paulo Biennial.
In 2005, Gomes released his first feature film, Cinema, aspirinas e urubus, selected for the section a Certain Regard of the Cannes Film Festival, where it has a good reception and won the National Education Prize, granted by the Ministry of Education of France. In Brazil, the film was released at the Río Film Festival, where it received the awards to best actor and the Special Jury Prize. Marcelo is also the author of the screenplay of Deserto feliz a film by Paulo Caldas.
