Luis Alberto Argueta Amézquita nació en la ciudad de Guatemala el 7 de noviembre de 1946. En 1971, se graduó de Ingeniero Industrial por la Universidad de Michigan. Al año siguiente, obtuvo una Maestría en Lenguas Romances y Cine, por la misma universidad. En 1972, estrenó su primer cortometraje, Perdón del gato rabón. Posteriormente estudió un doctorado en Cine y Literatura Comparada. En 1975, en Italia y Francia, fue asistente de Fernando Arrabal en el rodaje y posproducción del largometraje El árbol de Guernica.
Ha realizado, en 1976, el cortometraje Navidad guatemalteca (8 min, b/n, 16 mm) y dos años después El costo del algodón, documental prohibido en Guatemala, que aborda el impacto de los pesticidas en las zonas algodoneras de la Costa Sur.
A propósito de su residencia fuera de Guatemala ha dicho: “Cuando iniciaba mis estudios de ingeniería obtuve una beca completa para estudiar en una buena universidad en Michigan; después descubrí que el cine era una artesanía que se podía aprender, y aunque fui a Europa a trabajar en un largometraje con Arrabal y quise radicarme en Francia, no obtuve permiso de trabajo. Quise volver a Guatemala, pero las oportunidades eran inexistentes y la situación de represión a todo nivel no era nada alentadora. Más adelante me casé y me mudé a Nueva York, donde hice mi carrera profesional. Con el corto Navidad guatemalteca (1976) y el documental El costo del algodón (1978) afinco las raíces de mi cine en Guatemala".
En Estados Unidos Luis Argueta fue asistente de producción en la publicidad neoyorkina, productor para el director Henry Sandbank y productor ejecutivo con Santiago Suárez y Guede Films, todo entre 1980 y 1989, año en el que fundó Morningside Movies, Inc. en Nueva York, desde donde ha dirigido numerosos comerciales en EE.UU., México, Sudamérica, el Caribe y Guatemala. En 1993 fundó Producciones Buenos Días Guatemala.
En 1994 dirigió, produjo y escribió (con Justo Chang) El silencio de Neto, la película que colocó a Guatemala, por primera vez, en el mapa de la cinematografía mundial. Ha sido vista alrededor del mundo en incontables festivales y se han hecho versiones en inglés, francés y alemán.
Collect call es un filme de 2002 seleccionado para participar en el 19o. Festival Anual de Cine Latino de Chicago. Sobre el cine de su país suele decir: "El cine guatemalteco es un proyecto en formación, un río en el futuro hacia el cual van muchos arroyos, tributarios de diferentes procedencias. Tenemos tributarios-largometrajes nacionales como Lo que soñó Sebastián, de Rodrigo Rey Rosa; tributarios-largometrajes hechos con colaboración de otros países (México, en el caso de Donde acaban los caminos, de Monteforte Toledo; Cuba, en el caso de La casa de enfrente; Estados Unidos, en el caso de Evidencia invisible, de Alejandro Castillo, y de Collect call, mi última comedia amarga").
Luis Alberto Argueta Amézquita was born on November 7, 1946 in Ciudad de Guatemala. In 1971, he graduated as an industrial engineer at the University of Michigan. The next year, he got a Master’s degree on Romance Languages and Film at the same university. In 1972, he premiered his first short film Perdón del gato rabón (7.5 min, b/w, 16 mm.). Later, he got a Doctor’s degree in film and comparative literature. In 1975, he was Fernando Arrabal`s assistant in the shooting and post production of the feature film El árbol de Guernica in Italy and France.
In 1976, He directed the short film Navidad guatemalteca (8 min, b/w, 16 mm) and two years later the documentary El costo del algodón, which was banned in Guatemala, about the impact of pesticide in the cotton belt of the Southern Coast.
About the time he spent abroad he has said: “when I was beginning my studies to become an engineer, I got a scholarship to study at a good university in Michigan; later, I discovered that filmmaking is craftsmanship and can be learnt and I went to Europe to work in a feature film with Fernando Arrabal and tried to settle down in France, but was unable to get a work permit. I tried to return to Guatemala, but the opportunities were non-existent and the repression at all levels was not encouraging at all. Later, I got married and moved to New York, where I developed my career. With the short film Navidad guatemalteca (1976) and the documentary El costo del algodón (1978) I take roots on my Guatemalan films".
In the United States, Luis Argueta was production assistant of advertisement in New York, producer for the director Henry Sandbank and executive producer with Santiago Suárez and Guede Films, this took place between 1980 and 1989, in this last year Morningside Movies Inc. was founded in New York. From this company, he has directed several advertisements in the USA, México, South America, the Caribbean, and Guatemala. In 1993 he founded Producciones Buenos Días Guatemala.
In 1994 he directed, produced and wrote (with Justo Chang) El silencio de Neto, the film that positioned Guatemala for the first time in the world map of film productions. The film has been exhibited around the world in countless film festivals and versions into English, French and German have been made.
Collect call is a 2002 film, chosen to participate in the 19th edition of the annual Chicago Latin Film Festival. Talking about the movie industry in his country he has said: "The Guatemalan film industry is an in the making project, a future river towards which many streams of different sources tribute. We have tributary-national feature films such as Lo que soñó Sebastián, by Rodrigo Rey Rosa; tributary-feature films made in collaboration with other countries (Mexico, that is the case of Donde acaban los caminos, by Monteforte Toledo; Cuba, and the case of La casa de enfrente; USA, and the case of Evidencia invisible, by Alejandro Castillo, and Collect call, my last bitter comedy".
