Hijo de un empresario y una cantante, inició su carrera en la televisión a mediados de los años 80, codirigiendo novelas como Partido Alto, Roque Santeiro y Sinhá Moça. Su primera dirección general la realizó con Direito de Amar, telenovela de época protagonizada por Walter Negrão. En 1989 fue contratado por la extinta Red Manchete, dirigió la telenovela Pantanal, que gozó de gran éxito de público y crítica por renovar lo que se había hecho hasta entonces en ese campo; y la serie Fantasma da Ópera. Durante la primera mitad de los 90 participó en varias producciones independientes, como la novela A Idade da Loba, de la productora TV Plus.
Con Globo dirigió, entre 1999 y 2003 la miniserie Chiquinha Gonzaga, y junto a Benedito Ruy Barbosa, la exitosa novela Terra Nostra; la minserie Aquarela do Brasil, la novela O Clone, y la miniserie A Casa das Sete Mulheres.
Se inicia en el cine desde los años 80 como asistente de dirección, y dirige algunos cortometrajes. Tras una larga y exitosa carrera en la televisión, se destaca en el ámbito cinematográfico con la dirección del largometraje de ficción Olga
(2004), drama biográfico sobre la compañera del líder comunista Luiz Carlos Prestes. Olga resultó un acontecimiento en la escena brasileña, siendo vista por más de 3 millones de espectadores.
Monjardim tiene un estilo peculiar de dirigir, especialmente por el excesivo tono onírico de sus escenas. La opiniones de la prensa sobre su obra están divididas entre quienes la consideran repetitiva y los que la encuentran bella y poética.
Jayme Monjardim (1956-) debut in film was directing the narrative feature film Olga; he is considered a polemic figure of the Brazilian television, especially for his conflict with the writers of the texts he directs.

His first general direction was in Direito de Amar, a period soap opera with Walter Negrão in the leading role. in 1989 was hired by the former Red Manchete, to direct Pantanal and the series Fantasma da Ópera. During the first half of the 1990s he worked in some independent productions as the soap opera A Idade da Loba, from the TV Plus production company.
For TV Globo he directed the miniseries Chiquinha Gonzaga in 1999, a year in which he also directed together with Benedito Ruy Barbosa, the successful soap opera Terra Nostra. In 2000, directed the minseries Aquarela do Brasil, which was a failure; this was followed by the breaking-off with Benedito Ruy, that accused him of stealing for Aquarela... his setting atmosphere for the second part of Terra Nostra. In 2001 directed the soap opera O Clone, and two years later, the miniseries A Casa das Sete Mulheres.
Jayme has a peculiar way of directing, especially characterized by the excessive oneiric sense of his scenes; something that has been often criticized, because of the slow pass that it entails. The press opinions about his work are divided between those that considered it repetitive and those that find it beautiful and poetic.
