Nació en Temuco, Chile, en 1946. En los años 60 realizó estudios universitarios de Ingeniería Eléctrica e Informática, y en 1967 estudió Fotografía en el Instituto Fílmico de la Universidad Católica de Chile. Pero es en el año 1972 cuando da un giro definitivo hacia el cine documental.
Al comienzo, su trabajo como documentalista estuvo orientado hacia la capacitación campesina y luego a la educación universitaria en Venezuela. A partir de 1982 dirige y produce la serie documental Al sur del mundo, transmitida por el Canal de Televisión de la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.
Al sur del mundo nos revela, a través de sus más de 100 capítulos, todo el patrimonio cultural y natural chileno, valorizándolo y haciendo un llamado a su conservación y protección. Esta serie documental ha recibido premios y reconocimientos a nivel nacional e internacional. Uno de ellos fue el Premio Coral a la mejor serie documental para televisión que obtuvo en el IX Festival del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano de La Habana en 1987.
Otras realizaciones de Gedda son los documentales Los oficios del fuego (1996) y La minga que movió la vieja iglesia de Tey (1999). Este último se hizo acreedor del "Gran Santiaguillo", Primer Premio en el Festival Internacional de Cine Documental de Valparaíso, año 2000.
A partir de 2004, su productora –Sur Imagen- en asociación con TVN (Televisión Nacional de Chile) realiza la serie de reportajes Frutos del país. En la misma línea de Al sur del mundo, pero con un lenguaje audiovisual renovado, esta serie de corte documental se adentra en la identidad cultural de las diferentes regiones del país, deteniéndose en temas como mitos, personajes, gastronomía y agroturismo.
Actualmente Francisco Gedda es el director de la carrera de Cine y Televisión de la Universidad de Chile.

Francisco Gedda was born in 1946 in Temuco, Chile. During the 1960s he did university studies in electric engineering, and in 1967 studied photography in the Film Institute of Chile Catholic University (Universidad Católica de Chile). Since 1972 his film production became definitely consecrated to the documentary film.
At the beginning his documentary work was interested on Peasants learning and later to the university learning in Venezuela. Since 1982, he directed and produced the documentary series Al sur del mundo, broadcast by the Television channel of the Pontifical University of Chile (Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile).
The documentary series Al sur del mundo reveals, trough its more than hundred episodes, all the cultural and natural heritage of Chile, making it valuable and calling attention to its preservation and protection. This documentary series has received national and international awards. One of them is the First Coral Award for the Best documentary series for television at the 9th International Festival of the New Latin American Cinema of Havana in 1987.
Other of his films productions are the documentaries Los oficios del fuego del año (1996) and La minga que movió la vieja iglesia de Tey (1999), which won the award Gran Santiaguillo the first prize of Valparaíso International Documentary Film Festival (Festival Internacional de Cine Documental de Valparaíso) in 2000.
Since 2004 his production company –Sur Imagen- in partnership with TVN, Chile National Television (Televisión Nacional de Chile) made a series of reports Frutos del país. This series followed the same style of the previous Al sur del mundo, but using an renovated audiovisual language. This documentary style series deepens on the cultural identity of the different regions of Chile, paying attention to themes as myths, figures and popular characters, gastronomy and the agrarian tourism.
He is director of the studies of film and television at the Chile University (Universidad de Chile).
