Nace en Santo Domingo, República Dominicana, en 1958. Considerado uno de los documentalistas más relevantes en la historia del cine dominicano. Fortunato proviene del cine aficionado, donde se inició en 1974. Tres años después pasó al mundo profesional al ingresar en la Productora Fílmica Dominicana, en calidad de encargado del Departamento de Sonido, laborando en la edición y musicalización de documentales, comerciales y el noticiero Panorama Dominicano.
Una pasantía de estudios sobre producción televisiva en Venezolana de Televisión (1979), le franqueó las puertas de los principales canales de televisión de su país: Teleantillas, Color Visión, Rahintel y Radio Televisión Dominicana, donde ejerció diversas labores. Entre 1978 y 1987 colaboró como crítico de cine en importantes periódicos como El Caribe, La Noticia, Última Hora y Listín Diario. Esta labor se hizo extensiva a la radio, donde compartió con el crítico Arturo Rodríguez las emisiones de Imitación al Cine, en 1986; así como a la televisión, cuyo espacio Cine en Mujer 2000, condujo también por esa fecha.
Entre 1982 y 1986 se graduó de Comunicación Social en la Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo, y un año después tomó un taller de guión y dirección cinematográfica en la Escuela Internacional de Cine de San Antonio de los Baños (Cuba). Debutó en la realización del corto documental Tras las huellas de Palau, sobre la figura del pionero del cine silente dominicano Francisco Arturo Palau, obra que marca el rumbo temático de su cine, interesado en recuperar y examinar la memoria histórica y cultural de su nación, como lo demostrará su próximo proyecto: Frank Almánzar, imágenes de un artista (1987), dedicado al tempranamente desaparecido grabador dominicano. Al año siguiente realiza Abril: la trinchera del honor (1988), cuyo estreno en cuatro salas de Santo Domingo fue un verdadero acontecimiento de crítica y público, al punto que le mereció una placa de reconocimiento de la Asociación de Cronistas de Arte de República Dominicana. Primer documental de largometraje en la historia del cine nacional, Abril…es el resultado de una minuciosa investigación de archivo sobre la guerra de abril de 1965 y la intervención militar norteamericana en el conflicto. La cinta fue seleccionada por el Festival de La Habana de ese año, ganó el premio Pitirre al mejor documental de la región del Caribe, en San Juan Cinemafest (1990), y una mención honorífica en el Festival Iberoamericano de Video Documental Independiente Contra el silencio todas las voces (México, 2000).
Luego de rodar el corto musical Caribe, donde se ilustran los antecedentes africanos y europeos de la región caribeña, tomando como referencias musicales una pieza de salsa y un estudio de Chopin, y que ganara el Premio del Público en la XXVII Bienal de Artes Plásticas, Fortunato se embarca en la realización de un tríptico dedicado al dictador Leónidas Trujillo, titulado El poder del jefe. La primera parte apareció en 1991, y la segunda, estrenada en 1994, recibió al año siguiente el premio LASA’95, de Latin American Studies Association. La trilogía terminó en 1996, y tres años después su director recibió el reconocimiento de la Feria Internacional del Libro Santo Domingo '99 por su labor de rescate y difusión de la memoria histórica nacional. A la trilogía siguió un díptico consagrado a Joaquín Balaguer, cuya segunda parte, La violencia del poder, que aborda doce años de gobierno, finalizó en 2003.
Fortunato ha sido invitado a integrar el jurado de los festivales de Bilbao (1991) y San Juan Cinemafest (1992), además de recibir otros reconocimientos, como el Premio a la Excelencia Profesional del ejecutivo dominicano (2000), en reconocimiento a sus aportes al desarrollo de la cultura, y el Premio Internacional Lumière, de la Unión Nacional de Productores y Autores de Cine de Italia (2001), por su contribución a la cinematografía nacional a través del género documental. En la actualidad es Presidente de la empresa Videocine Palau, Inc., de la cual es fundador.
René Fortunato (1958-) was born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. He is considered one of the most outstanding documentary filmmakers in the history of the Dominican cinema; Fortunato began in the non-professional cinema, where he started in 1974. Three years later, he entered the professional film world, when he began to work in the Dominican Film Production Company (Productora Fílmica Dominicana) in charge of the sound department; there he worked in the edition and musicalization of documentaries, commercials and the newsreel Panorama Dominicano.
An assistantship in television production at Venezolana de Televisión (1979) opened him the doors of the main television channels of his country: Teleantillas, Color Visión, Rahintel and Radio Televisión Dominicana, where he made several works. From 1978 to 1987, he contributed as film critic to important newspapers as El Caribe, La Noticia, Última Hora and Listín Diario. This kind of work was extensive to the radio, where he shared with the critic Arturo Rodríguez the broadcastings of the radio program Imitación al Cine, in1986. Also at this time he hosted on television the program Cine en Mujer 2000.
From 1982 to 1986, he graduated in Social Communication at the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo), and a year later he received a direction and screenplay film workshop in the International Film and Television School in San Antonio de los Baños (Cuba). Hs debut as director was the documentary short film, Tras las huellas de Palau, about the Dominican silent film pioneer Arturo Palau; this work pointed out the thematic course of his films which are interested in recovering and examining the cultural and historic memory of his country; as he would show in his next project: Frank Almánzar, imágenes de un artista (1987), dedicated to the early deceased engraver. The next year, he makes Abril: la trinchera del honor (1988), which after is release in four Santo Domingo theaters turned into a real succseful event praised by both the critics and the audience, to an extent that he deserved a recognition plaque of the Arts Journalists Association (Asociación de Cronistas de Arte) of the Dominican Republic. Abril: la trinchera del honor, first feature length documentary film in the history of the Dominican cinema, was the result of one meticulous archive research about the April war in 1965 and the North American military intervention in the conflict. The film was selected for the International Festival of The New Latin American Cinema of Havana that year, and was the winner of the Pitirre Prize for the best documentary in the Caribbean region and also at the San Juan Cinemafest (1990). He also received an honor award at the Iberian-American Festival of Independent Documentary Video: Against the Silence all the Voices (Festival Iberoamericano de Video Documental Independiente, Contra el silencio todas las voces), México, 2000.
Fortunato directed the musical short film Caribe, in which the African and European antecedents of the Caribbean region were shown through two musical pieces, one referred to salsa music and the other to a Chopin´s study, the short, won the Public Prize in the Plastic Arts Biennial, Fortunato also make the triptych about Leónidas Trujillo's dictatorship, El poder del jefe. Its first part was filmed in 1991, and the second, released in 1994, received the LASA’95 Prize from the renown Latin American Studies Association. The triology was concluded in 1996 and, three years later, the filmmaker received the recognition from The Internacional Santo Domingo Book Fair, 1999 (Feria Internacional del Libro Santo Domingo '99 ) for his work in rescuing and diffusion of the national historic memory. To the triology followed a diptych dedicated to Joaquín Balaguer, its second part La violencia del poder, about twelve years of goverment, was finished in 2003.
Fortunato has been invited to take part as jury of the Bilbao Film Festivals (1991) and the San Juan Cinemafest Film Festival (1992). He has received others recognitions as the Professional Excellence Prize by the Dominican executive (2000), as recongnition to his contribution to the development of culture and the International Lumière Prize, by the National Association of Film Producers and Authors of Italy in 2001, by his contribution to the National cinema through the documentary genre. He is president of the Video Cine Palau, Inc. production company, of which he was founder.
