    Estudia cine en el Centro Universitario de Estudios Cinematográficos de la UNAM. Incursiona en la industria fílmica como asistente de producción y dirección, realiza diversos cortometrajes, escribe guiones para la Secretaría de Educación Pública y, en 1976, se integra a la planta docente del Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfica (CCC).

    En los siguientes años combina la enseñanza cinematográfica con la realización de documentales para televisión y programas de las series Hora marcada y Tony Tijuana, así como comerciales y películas en video. En 1982 dirige su primer largometraje, Nocaut, que recibe el Ariel a la Mejor Ópera Prima y Mejor Coactuación Masculina, y el Heraldo como Mejor Película y Mejor Director.

    Posteriormente filma la cinta Desiertos mares (1992), reconocida con el Ariel a la Mejor Dirección y al Mejor Argumento Original, y en el San Juan Cinemafest (Puerto Rico) con el Premio Especial del Jurado, entre otros. En 1994 gana el premio al Mejor Director en el XII Festival Latinoamericano de Trieste, Italia, con su versión al clásico de Emilio Fernández, Salón México (1994). De 1993 al 2000, funge como miembro del Sistema Nacional de Creadores de Arte.




    He took film studies at the University for Cinematographic Studies (Centro Universitario de Estudios Cinematográficos) of UNAM.  He explores the film industry as production and direction assistant and he made several short films, he also wrote scripts for the Secretariat of Public Education and in 1976 he becomes part of the teaching staff of the Cinematographic Training Centre (Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfica) (CCC).

    During the following years, he combines cinematographic teaching with the task of making documentaries for television and programs of the series Hora marcada and Tony Tijuana, as well as advertisement and movies in video format. In 1982 he direct his first feature film, Nocaut, which won the Ariel prize to author’s first work and best male co-acting and the Heraldo prize for Best Film and Best Director.

    Later, he makes the film Desiertos mares (1992), awarded with the Ariel prize to Best Direction and Best Original Plot, the film also got the Jurors Special Prize at the San Juan Cinemafest (Puerto Rico), among others. In 1994 he wins the prize to Best Director at the XII Latin American Festival of Trieste, Italy, with his version of the classic by Emilio Fernández, Salón Mexico (1994). From 1993 to 2000, he takes a role as a member of the National System of Art Creators (Sistema Nacional de Creadores de Arte).
