Con su primer largometraje, el documental Até a última gota (1980), recibió el Premio Especial del Jurado en el Festival de Gramado, el Premio al Mejor Documental en el Festival de Mannheim, en Alemania, y una mención en el Festival de La Habana. Antes ya había realizado tres cortometrajes: Pra não dizer que competi (1974), Leila para sempre Diniz (1975), en codirección con Mariza Leãio, y P. S. te amo (1977).

Después de Doida demais (1989), suceso de taquilla con la estrella Vera Fischer, dirigió la producción inglesa A Child from the South (1992). En 1997 dirigió Guerra de Canudos, la mayor producción brasileña hasta entonces, y también la más taquillera del cine brasileño del año, que participó en el festival de Berlín y fue exhibido en la televisión en forma de miniserie. Quase nada (2000) recibió el Premio del Público en Gramado.
En 2004 lanzó su décimo largometraje, Onde anda você, además del documental O cinema é meu jardim. Dos años después estrenó Zuzu Angel, largometraje de ficción producido por Joaquim Vaz de Carvalho, que cuenta la historia de una estilista y su hijo Stuart, uno de los mayores enemigos del régimen militar.
