Director y guionista de Whisky y 25 Watts, las dos películas uruguayas más famosas de los últimos años, ambas realizadas junto a Juan Pablo Rebella. Pablo Stoll comenzó a trabajar con Rebella mientras cursaba Comunicación Social en la Universidad Católica de Uruguay, de donde egresaron en 1999. Para Stoll, la relación con el cine empezó en un cumpleaños, cuando quedó petrificado al ver La Guerra de las Galaxias.

La decisión de dedicarse al séptimo arte llegó a los 17 años, cuando Pablo reconoció que “no sabía dibujar y no podía hacer historietas”. Entonces se inscribió en un curso de video en la escuela Contraplano, donde conoció a Gonzalo Delgado, egresado de la EICTV y director de arte y co-guionista de Whisky.

Dentro de la escasa filmografía uruguaya, 25 Watts sorprendió por sus premios y la excelente acogida en los distintos festivales. Fue premiada en Rotterdam, y en Buenos Aires alcanzó el premio FIPRESCI, y el de mejor actuación masculina compartida por sus tres protagonistas. 25 Watts es una postal de barrio que muestra -en sugerente blanco y negro- 24 horas en la vida de tres jóvenes amigos: el Leche, Javier y Seba, que han consagrado sus existencias al más placentero de los quehaceres mundanos: el no hacer "nada". El filme nos muestra el apático deambular de los tres jóvenes, quienes parecen transitar por la vida como si fueran arrastrados por las circunstancias. Se trata de un discurso de carácter apologista en donde la irresponsabilidad se presenta como la última de las trincheras posibles para una generación que ya no puede refugiarse en sus mayores, ni en la promesa de un futuro borroso y poco alentador. Es una de las películas uruguayas más taquilleras y resultó la más elogiada por la crítica nacional e internacional.

Whisky se estrenó en el Festival Internacional de Cine de Cannes, en la sección Una cierta mirada, donde logró el premio FIPRESCI (Federación Internacional de Prensa Cinematográfica). Es la historia de tres personajes pequeños y un tanto miserables, en la que asoma el patetismo de ciertas vidas rutinarias. La historia de Jacobo, Marta y Herman está contada a través de silencios y detalles mínimos. A través de un tratamiento naturalista, se revela un toque de humor absurdo, el absurdo que implica repetir los mismos pequeños actos y las mismas palabras todos los días.

En una entrevista aseguró el cineasta: "Por un tiempo me pregunté por qué estábamos produciendo esta película. Porque, después de 25 Watts, un filme joven y autobiográfico, estábamos haciendo Whisky, una película sobre dos hermanos judíos de 60 años, una mujer y una fábrica. Soy solamente un chico, como mi colega. Ninguno de nosotros tiene 60 años ni somos judíos ni tenemos una fábrica. Cuando escribimos el guión, nos dimos cuenta de que quizá estos personajes no difieren mucho de lo que somos. Que no estábamos tan alejados de esos tres tipos de soledad. Esto puede ser una proyección de nosotros mismos, lo que podríamos ser dentro de 20, 30 años".

Pablo Stoll (1974-) is an Uruguayan film director and screenwriter. He directed together with Juan Pablo Rebella the features Whisky and 25 Watts, two of  the most prestigious Urugayan films of all times. He began to work with Rebella while he studied social communication at the Catholic University of Uruguay, from where they graduated in 1999. For Stoll, his relation with the cinema began when he was petrified as he saw American director Georges Lucas´s Starwars.

When he was seventeen he decided to devote himself to the art of film, as he realized he could not draw and neither make comics. Then he registered in a video course at the Contraplano School, where he met Gonzalo Delgado, who was a graduate of the EICTV training institution of Cuba and would be co-screenwriter of Whisky.

Within the scarcity of Uruguayan films, 25 Watts surprised for its many awards and the excellent reception at different  film festivals. The film was awarded at Rotterdam, and achieved the FIPRESCI prize in Buenos Aires , and the Best Actor award for the ensemble of its three leading actors' performance. 25 Watts is the portrait of a neighborhood- sot in suggestive black and white images – that show 24 hours in the life of three young friends: El Leche, Javier and Seba, who have devoted their lives to the most pleasant of the leisure task: doing nothing. The film shows the apathetic roaming of the three young men, who seem to be swept away by circumstances in their wander. The film has a praising discourse, in which irresponsibility is shown as the last possible resource of a generation that can not take refuge either in his predecessor nor in a blurred and discouraging future. 25 Watts was one of the most successful Uruguayan movies at the national box office and one of the most acclaimed by the national and international critics.

Whisky was first shown at Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes Film Festival, where it won the FIPRESCI Prize, awarded by the International Federation of Film Critics. It is the story of three insignificant and somewhat mean characters, which reveals the pathetic quality of certain monotonous lives. Jacobo, Marta and Herman’s lives are told through silent and minimum details. Trough a naturalist treatment, is revealed an absurd humor touch, the absurdity of repeating the same insignificant acts and words every day.

In an interview the filmmaker assured: “For a time I asked myself why we were producing this movie. Why after 25 Watts, a youthful and autobiographical film, we were doing Whisky, a film about two sixty years old Jewish brothers, a woman and a factory. I am only a boy like my colleague. We are not sixty and neither are we Jews or have a factory. But when we wrote the screenplay, we thought that these characters were not as different to what we are now, that we are not that far from these three kinds of solitude. It may be a projection of ourselves, of how we could be like 20 or 30 years from now.
