Guillermo Escalón
(El Salvador, 1950)
BIOGRAFIA
FILMOGRAFIA

Guillermo Escalón (1950-) became interested in filmmaking thanks to his scientific practice. As a biology student at the University of El Salvador, he had to document his work. “For subjects such as Zoology, I began taking pictures and then I became involved in using images in motion”, he has stated. This interest led him to filming in 1973, the documentary
Guatemala, dos religiones
, and collaborating with Baltazar Polío as cameraman in his film
Topiltzín
(1975).
Escalón combined his first filming attempts with his liking for the theatre. He joined the university workshop “Taller de los vagos”; it is under that name that his first important production
La zona intertidal
(1980) was presented to the public.
In the same year, he participated as cameraman in the film
Morazán
(1980), where he put in record the genesis of the first guerrilla fighters. The film won the main prize at the International Leipzig Festival for Documentary & Animated Film. Later, he created the filmng team Cero a la izquierda, together with Manuel Sorto, who mainly collaborated in the editing of the films. The team joined up the System Radio Venceremos to help with the production of films for the Ejército Revolucionario del Pueblo (ERP) (Revolutionary Army of the People).
Other films made by Escalón are:
Carta de Morazán
(1982), and a while later
Tiempo de audacia
(1983), a feature film about the USA help to the Salvadoran army.
When peace was made in the country, the filmmaker committed his efforts to the huge process of rescuing the past cinema production of El Salvador. It is in this process that he was able to make the documentary
Alejandro
(1993), for which he restored the film material of the work of Alejandro Cotto that almost lost in the rusted cans at the Apolo movie theater and in Televisión Educativa.
Nevertheless, a recent interest for narrative has changed the course of his work. In 1998, he participated in the production of the feature film
Ixcán
, with Brazilian producer Enrique Goldman. After that work, the English production company Parallax Pictures decided to support Goldman with the production of the film
Princesa
(1999). This Anglo-Italian fiction film deals with a love story in the world of the transvestite prostitution in Milán, Italy, Escalón was director of photography of the film.
Later, he worked in the filming of a script written by the Salvadorian Horacio Castellanos Moya about the garífuna culture of the Atlantic coast of Guatemala.
