Nació el 28 de septiembre de 1936 en Guanabacoa, La Habana. Cursó estudios de Comercio y Radio Electrónica. Comenzó a trabajar en el ICAIC en 1960 como Asistente de Producción y ese año pasó al Noticiero ICAIC Latinoamericano en calidad de Productor, y posteriormente coordinador del mismo. Unido al desempeño de esta tarea, realizó un grupo de notas para el Noticiero ICAIC, iniciándose de ese modo en el guión, dirección y edición cinematográficas.
En 1961, alternando con el trabajo del Noticiero, realizó su primer documental. De 1963 a 1968, cursó estudios de Dirección Cinematográfica en el Instituto Superior de Cine de Moscú, URSS y durante ese período realizó trabajos periodísticos, filmaciones para la APN y dos cortos dramáticos en los estudios del Instituto de Cine: Yo, en Moscú y Talento, adaptación al cine de un cuento de Chejov que recibió un premio en el V festival de Cine de esa Institución.
En 1968 regresó a Cuba y se incorporó nuevamente al ICAIC, en el Departamento de documentales científico-populares. Es en la actualidad uno de los documentalistas más importantes del país. Ha participado en numerosos festivales representando a Cuba. Es miembro de la UNEAC y de la Sociedad General de Autores de España.
Idelfonso Ramos was born on September 28, 1936 in Guanabacoa, Havana. He studied Commerce and Radio Electronics. He began working at Cuban Institute of the Film Art and Industry (ICAIC) in 1960 as a production assistant and that year he started as a producer and later coordinator of the Noticiero ICAIC Latinoamericano (newsreel). While doing this task, he made a series of notes for the Noticiero ICAIC, thereby he started to write, direct and edit films.
In 1961, alternating with the work at the Newsreel, he made his first documentary. From 1963 to 1968, he studied Film Direction at the Film Institute in Moscow, USSR. During this period he work as journalist and filmed for the APN (NPC) and directed two dramatic shorts in the studios of the Film Institute: Yo, en Moscú that was 20 minutes long and Talento 30 minutes long. The latter was a filmed adaptation of a story by Chekhov and it received an award at the 5th Film Festival of that institution.
In 1968, he returned to Cuba and joined the ICAIC again in the Department of scientific and popular documentaries. He is one of the most important filmmakers in the country. He has participated in many festivals representing Cuba. He is a member of the Union of Cuban Writers and Artistist(UNEAC) and of the General Society of Spanish Authors (Sociedad General de Autores de España).
