Nace en la Ciudad de México en 1945. Estudia Licenciatura en Derecho en la UNAM, institución en la que se vincula al quehacer de los cineclubs. Entre 1972 y 1975 cursa estudios de actuación con el director de teatro Dimitro Socarrás y, al mismo tiempo, realiza sus primeras incursiones en el ámbito cinematográfico desde el taller de la Casa del Lago.
En 1975 se especializa en medios y técnicas audiovisuales en la Universidad de Londres, y asiste a cursos de Historia y Crítica Cinematográfica en la Slade Film School.
En 1977 asiste a Jaime Humberto Hermosillo en el filme Las apariencias engañan, y posteriormente a Sergio Olhovich en El infierno de todos tan temido (1979).
Entre 1983-1985 realiza para la UTEC la serie en video Los que hicieron nuestro cine, formada por 62 programas que abarcan desde los inicios del cine hasta 1976. Este trabajo tiene su continuidad entre 1992-1996, período en que realiza 60 programas más para una nueva serie Los que hacen nuestro cine.
En 1982 escribe y dirige su primer largometraje, La víspera, por el que recibe al año siguiente cuatro premios Ariel, entre ellos, a la Mejor Ópera Prima. Después de Días difíciles (1987), produce y dirige Morir en el Golfo (1989); y en 1992 realiza Miroslava, cinta por la que obtiene al año siguiente, entre otros, el Premio ACE por Mejor película en el Festival de Cine Latino de Nueva York, y los premios Ariel por actriz de cuadro, fotografía, edición, música, sonido y maquillaje. En 1994, la Sociedad de Críticos de Nueva York le otorga el Premio a la Mejor película y a la Mejor dirección.
He was born in Mexico City in 1945. He has a university degree on law from UNAM, an institution connected to the activities of cine-clubs. Between 1972 and 1975 he took acting courses with theatre director Dimitro Socarrás and, at the same time he begins his first explorations of the cinematographic environment from the workshop of the Casa del Lago.
In 1975 he majors in audiovisual means and techniques at the University of London, and attends courses on Cinematographic History and Critic at the Slade Film School.
In 1977 he works as assistant for Jaime Humberto Hermosillo in the film Las apariencias engañan, and later for Sergio Olhovich in El infierno de todos tan temido (1979).
In the period from 1983 to 1985 he makes for UTEC the video series Los que hicieron nuestro cine, consisting on 62 programs that cover a period from the beginning of the cinema to 1976.
This work was continued from 1992 to1996, period in which 60 more programs are made for the series Los que hacen nuestro cine.
In 1982 he writes and directs his first feature film, La víspera, which won him in the following year four Ariel prizes, among them, to the best author’s first work. After Días difíciles (1987), he produces and directs Morir en el Golfo (1989); and in 1992 he makes Miroslava, a film that won him the following year, among others, the Prize ACE for Best Film at the New York Latin Cinema Festival, and the prizes Ariel for photography, editing, music, sound and make-up. In 1994, the New York Society of Critics grants this film the Prize to Best Film and Best direction.
