Nace en La Paz en 1964 y desde muy joven se integra al equipo de producción del Grupo Ukamau. Posteriormente, continúa sus estudios en el Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografía de Roma, Italia, en dirección y montaje cinematográfico, que culmina en 1988, y dos años después se especializa en Semiología del Lenguaje, en Roma. De esa fecha hasta la actualidad ha trabajado como docente en el Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografía y como editora de una unidad de la RAI.
Ha trabajado como editora en los filmes El atraco (2004), de Paolo Agazzi, y Voyage (2004), de Ron Havilio. En 1995 dirige su ópera prima, el largometraje documental Sayariy, coproducción entre Bolivia e Italia realizada en el norte de Potosí, en las comunidades de Fichichua y Umagila. Sayariy narra la historia de la festividad en la cual dos comunidades vecinas eligen a sus representantes para que protagonicen una lucha a muerte; la sangre de los combatientes sirve como ofrenda a la tierra. El filme tiene escenas documentales como reconstrucciones que recuerdan mucho al cine realizado por Jorge Sanjinés.
En 2005 comenzó la filmación de su segundo largometraje, No le digas, el cual narra, a través de poemas de Jaime Sanz, importante escritor boliviano, un pasaje de su vida.

Mela Márquez (1964-) was born in La Paz, Bolivia. Being still very young, she joined the production team of the Ukamau Enterprise. Later, she continued to study at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografía from Roma, Italy, where she studied direction and film editing, she finished her studies in 1988, and two years later she becomes a specialist in Semiology of Language in Rome. From that moment on she has worked as a professor at the Experimental film Center in Rome and as editor of a unit of RAI.
She has worked as editor in the films El atraco (2004) by Paolo Agazzi and Voyage (2004) by Ron Havilio. In 1995 she directs her first author’s work, the feature documentary Sayariy, a co production between Bolivia and Italy made in the north of Potosí, in the communities of Fichichua and Umagila. Sayariy narrates the story of a festivity in which two neighbouring communities select their representatives so that they fight to death and their blood is offered as a sacrifice to the land. The film combines documentary scenes and reconstructions which remind people of the style used by filmmaker Jorge Sanjinés.
In 2005 she began filming her second feature film, No le digas, which narrates through poems written by Jaime Sanz, an important period in the life of this important Bolivian writer.
