CINEASTA
  • Raúl Tosso
    (Argentina, 1953)

Raúl Tosso (born in 1953), a producer, director and screenwriter, is one of those filmmakers who achieved the right to appear in any anthology of Argentine cinema thanks to a single film. Although, it isn´t the only one that he made, the major work of Tosso is his first feature film, Gerónima (1985), a chilling docudrama, based on a true story, told and written by the director himself. The story is about a woman, descended from the Mapuche natives, that destroys herself because she couldn´t stand the effects of a cross-culture. She suffers this influence while being in a hospital where she is interned with the intention to help her.

The real events reflected by Gerónima occurred in 1976, in an isolated location of the province of Río Negro, where a Mapuche native lived with her four children in a poor house, without any health care. One day, a police patrol arrived and took them to a hospital. The intention was good: they could not continue living like this. At the hospital, Gerónima was separated from her children. The days went by and Gerónima wasn´t adapted, then she began to despair because she could not be with her children. That resulted in the doctors decision of "respect the will" of the family group and bring it back to their normal environment. Then the health institution discharged them. A phrase that Gerónima said at the hospital sums up this drama: "I do not want them to give me a hand; I want them to take their hands off me." Soon after, Gerónima and her four children were readmitted at the hospital. Three of her children died of a whooping cough they got during the previous hospitalization. She lost her mind. The homonymous book by the doctor Jorge Pellegrini was the basis of the film, which in 1985 was directed by Raúl Tosso, starring the Mapuche actress Luisa Calcumil.

In addition to Gerónima, that was awarded with about 16 national and international prizes, Tosso made the short film La sal de la tierra (1990), produced SOS Gulubú (1994), and made the feature film Tres veranos (1998, written by the director) and also the documentary film 1420, la aventura de educar (2004). In the film Tres veranos, he critizices repression, political disappearances and death through the story of three friends, who left in 1973 to the seaside town of Mar de Ajo. They spent three summers there. While 1420, la aventura de educar retrieves the stories of 65 American teachers who came to Argentina en1869, invited by Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, under the Public Instruction Act 1420, which established the compulsory, free and gradual primary education in Argentina. The fate of these women was to become teachers of teachers and to found a primary school system in Argentina. Many of them came because the salary was high, others, like Mary Gorman, Julia Hope and Frances Wood did it for passion. Most of the teachers didn´t speak Spanish. As it is clearly stated in Tosso´s film, they should deploy their Calvinist values, "the individual effort and dedication to work", to face the ignorance, indolence and intolerance that existed in these pampas.

The film Cautiva (2003), by Gastón Biraben, is executive produced by Raúl Tosso.
