    Cineasta conocida en Brasil sobre todo por su largometraje documental Carmen Miranda. Bananas is my business (1994), con el que obtuvo los premios de mejor filme otorgado por el público, la crítica y el jurado en el festival de Brasilia. El filme ganó, además, el Hugo Dorado al mejor documental en el festival de Chicago y fue seleccionado entre los 10 mejores filmes de su categoría por el crítico Andrew Sarris.

    Carioca nacida en 1942, vive desde hace años en Nueva York, donde es productora y directora de documentales sobre Brasil. Sus primeros trabajos estuvieron relacionados con el estudio del papel femenino en la sociedad moderna, como en A estrevista (1966), que analiza los valores burgueses de mujeres jóvenes pertenecientes a la clase media alta de Río de Janeiro; Simplemente Jenny y The double day (1975), que dirige la mirada hacia el estatus de la mujer como fuerza de trabajo en América Latina.

    Su primera película en Estados Unidos, The emerging woman, fue seleccionada como filme oficial de la American Bicentenial Comission, en 1976. A partir de los años 80, hizo una serie de documentales sobre temas políticos, como From the ashes... Nicaragua today (1982), que ganó el premio Emmy, y Retrato de un terrorista (1986), sobre Fernando Gabeira.

    Dirigió, además, varios documentales para canales internacionales de televisión, como HBO, PBS, Channel 4, Radiotelevisão Portuguesa, National Geographic, entre otros.

    De regreso a Brasil desde mediados de la década del 90, concluyó en 2004 su primer largometraje de ficción, Vida de menina, adaptación del libro de Alice Dayrell Caldeira Brant. Con este filme ganó seis premios en el Festival de Gramado de 2004 (mejor filme para el público y para el jurado, guión, fotografía, y dirección de arte), y en ese mismo año obtuvo el premio del público en el Festival de Río.




    Helena Solberg-Ladd (1949-) is mainly known in Brazil for its documentary Carmen Miranda. Bananas are my business (1994. She was born in Rio, in 1942, but  had  lived for many years in the USA, where she works as producer and director of  documentary films about Brazil. Her first work were related with the analysis of the role of women in modern society, like in A estrevista (1966), that analyzed the bourgeois values of young women belonging to middle class of Rio; Simplemente Jenny and The double day (1975), that examines the  status of women as workforce in  Latin America.

    His first film in the United States, The emerging woman, was selected as official  film of the  American Bicentennial Commission in 1976. Beginning in the the 1980´s, she created a series of documentary film about  political issues, such as  From the ashes... Nicaragua today (1982), which won the  an Emmy  award and  Retrato de um terrorista (1986), about Fernando Gabeira. She also directed some documentaries for international TV networks as HBO, PBS, Channel 4, Radiotelevisão Portuguesa, National Geographic, among others. With the feature Carmen Miranda. Bananas is my business she won the Best Films award of the audience, the   critic and the jury at the Brasilia Film Festival. The film also was awarded with the Golden Hugo for Best documentary at the Chicago Film Festival and was selected among the 10 best in its category by the critic Andrew Sarris.

    Back in Brazil since the mid 1990s, she finished his first narrative feature film in 2004, Vida de menina, an adaptation of the book by Alice Dayrell Caldeira Brant. Thanks to this film the director received six awards at the Gramado Film Festival in 2004 (Best film according to the jury and the audience, best screenplay, Cinematography, and Art Direction), the same year the film won the audience award at the Rio Film Festival.
