Nació en Uruguay en 1955, y a los veinte años de edad tuvo que exiliarse en Buenos Aires, donde estuvo hasta fines del 76. Luego del golpe de Estado en Argentina, debió partir nuevamente, esta vez con destino a España, donde reside desde entonces. Sufrió en su propia familia la desaparición, la estancia en centros clandestinos de detención y el secuestro que caracterizó a las dictaduras existentes entonces en su país y Argentina.
En España, comenzó a trabajar como guionista y luego directora de cine y televisión. En 1992 filmó un corto, titulado sugestivamente Golpe a Golpe, que describía las vivencias madrileñas de dos exiliados, uno uruguayo y el otro argentino. Su primer largo, Retrato de mujer con hombre al fondo (con actuación de Margarita Musto y música de Jorge Drexler) obtuvo el premio Calabuch a la Mejor Ópera Prima, en 1997.
Los pasos perdidos (2001), su segundo largometraje, es una historia ficcionada muy próxima a un hecho real, inspirada libremente en la lucha del poeta argentino Juan Gelman, que buscó hasta dar con el paradero de su nieta, nacida en una prisión clandestina, y que vivía con identidad falsa y abuelos también falsos en un pueblo del interior de Uruguay. La película cuenta con las actuaciones de los argentinos Federico Luppi y Luis Brandoni y las españolas Concha Velazco e Irene Visedo.
