Realiza estudios de teatro en el Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes; posteriormente Ciencias de la Comunicación, en la Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana y Composición Dramática en el Taller de Hugo Argüelles. Ha sido becario del FONCA y del Centro Nacional de las Artes.
Antes de dedicarse al cine, produjo programas radiofónicos para la promoción y preservación de la música tradicional mexicana. En el ámbito profesional se ha desempeñado como director o fotógrafo de comerciales, documentales y cortometrajes. Con Conejo (1999), su primer cortometraje, se forjó una sólida reputación en el circuito internacional de festivales. En 2004 dirigió el documental Tierra caliente... se mueren los que la mueven. El violín es su primer largometraje.
Francisco Vargas (1968-) first studies dramatic art at the National Institute of Fine Arts (Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes), and later he took Communication Sciences at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (Metropolitan Autonomous University) and dramatic composition at Hugo Argüelles workshop. He has had scholarships from FONCA and from the National Centre of the Arts (Centro Nacional de las Artes).
Before starting his career as a filmmaker he produced radio programs dedicated to the promotion and preservation of the traditional Mexican music. In the professional field he has worked as director and photographer of advertisement, short films and documentaries. With Con Conejo, his first short film, he gained a solid reputation at the international film festivals. In 2004, he directed the documentary Tierra caliente... se mueren los que la mueven.
El violín was his first feature film, which was acclaimed and honored at numerous international film festivals, receiving an impressive numbers of Awards around the world at festival such as San Sebastián, Cannes (Un Certain Regard, Best Actor), Huelva, Gramado, São Paulo, Cartagena, Miami, San Francisco, and the ACE at New York. The film was also the winner of the main categories at the 2007 edition of the Ariel Awards.
