  • Víctor Arregui
    (Ecuador, 1962)



    Director y guionista, nació en Guaranda, Ecuador. Se desempeña también profesionalmente como fotógrafo en largos y cortometrajes, así como en series para la televisión. Ha dirigido numerosos documentales de temática social.

    Como fotógrafo, ha trabajado para la UNICEF e incursionado en la fotografía de reportaje, de arquitectura y de retratos. Ha sido ganador de premios internacionales en Alemania y Cuba. En 1993 realizó el corto Tiling y en 1999 llevó a cabo su primera obra de ficción para cine, el cortometraje El tropezón, como parte del proyecto Ecuador en Corto.

    Con la productora cinematográfica Bochinche, de la cual es miembro fundador,  realizó su primer largometraje de ficción Fuera de juego (2002), película ganadora del Premio Cine en Construcción, del 50 Festival Internacional de Cine Donostia – San Sebastián, España. El filme, del cual también es coguionista, recibió también el premio Nuevos directores en el Festival de San Sebastián. Filmada en video digital, con actores no profesionales, esta película ha sido descrita por la crítica ecuatoriana como "una ficción con sabor a documental", donde la trama ficcional está hondamente enraizada en la realidad.  En la cinta, la imagen documental y la puesta en escena se entretejen hábilmente logrando una crítica social de mucha sutileza, y las situaciones límite en las que coloca a sus personajes no caen nunca en el melodrama.

    Su segundo largometraje, Cuando me toque a mi, contó con reconocimientos nacionales e internacionales. En el 2006 obtuvo el premio a la Mejor Actuación Masculina en la 15º Edición  del Festival de Biarritz-Cinémas et Cultures d'Amérique Latine. A este segundo largometraje de Víctor Arregui se lo puede ver como un retrato coral y pesimista de un Quito que hace pensar en cualquier otra ciudad de América del Sur, en parte anclada en el siglo XIX, con los estertores del catolicismo colonial a cuestas, una pequeña burguesía perdida y decadente, y la marginalidad como principal evidencia del fracaso capitalista. El espacio, por demás simbólico, que al final abarca todo Quito,  cabe (o acaba) en una morgue, y por tanto no extraña que el punto de vista del film termine siendo el  de un médico forense solitario y escéptico.



    Victor Arregui, born in Guaranda, is a film director and screenwriter. He has worked professionally as photographer in feature and short films and in television series. The filmmaker has directed a great number of documentaries dealing with social issues.

    As photographer, he has worked for UNICEF and has made incursion into press, architecture and portrait photography. He has been an award winner of international prizes in Germany and Cuba. In 1993 he made the short film Tiling and in 1999 directed his first narrative film, the short El tropezón, as part of the Ecuador en Corto project.

    With the Film Company Producer Bochinche, of wich is a founder member, made his First narrative feature film Fuera de juego (2002), which was award winner of the Cine en Construcción (Work in Progress) award at the 50th San Sebatián International Film Festival, Spain. The film of which he is also a co-screenwriter received also the award of New Directors at the same festival. Filmed in digital video with no professional actors, this feature has been described by the critics as “a fiction film with a documentary tone”, in which the narrative plot is deeply related to reality. In the film, the documentary image and the mise en scene are interwoven with great skill, managing to express a very subtle social criticism and extreme situations, in which he places his characters without making concession to  the use of melodrama.   
               
    His second feature film, Cuando me toque a mí, had a national and international recognition. In 2006, this film won the award for the Best Actor at the 15th  Biarritz Film Festival - Cinemas et Cultures d’Amerique Latine, This second Victor Aregui´s feature  film may be seen as a choral  and pessimistic view of Quito, similar to the one of any other south American city, partly  anchored in the 19th Century,  with the burden of colonial death throes, and a decadent bourgeoisie and marginality as the most evident proof  of the capitalist failure. The space, by the way symbolic, that at the end covers all Quito, ends in a morgue, and therefore it is no strange that the film final point of view be the one of a skeptical, lonely  forensic doctor.
