Fue director del Festival de Cine “Cero Latitud” de 2003 a 2009 y uno de los fundadores del festival de cine documental “Encuentros del Otro Cine – EDOC ”.
Antes de estudiar dirección de cine en el INSAS (Bélgica), estudió sociología en Quito. Ha sido profesor en la Universidad de las Américas, en la Escuela de Cine y Actuación INCINE, en la Academia Diplomática del Ecuador, en la Universidad Nacional de Chimborazo y en la Universidad San Francisco de Quito.
Ha dirigido los documentales Este maldito país (2008), El lugar donde se juntan los polos (Mejor Documental Festival Internacional de Cine de Valdivia, Chile, 2002; Mejor Guión Festival Latinoamericano de Rosario, Argentina, 2003; Premio Mayor del Festival Sur Realidades, Bogotá, 2004 y Premio Brouillon d’un reve, de la Scam, París, 1999), Ningún ser humano es ilegal (2001) y Marineros (1997).
El lugar donde se juntan los polos es un filme muy reflexivo e intimista que por su aproximación estilística y narrativa también podría considerarse un referente en la cinematografía ecuatoriana. Bajo la forma de una carta filmada dirigida a sus hijos, el realizador cuenta de forma elíptica la historia de su familia y la de su compañera, una historia desperdigada entre América Latina y Francia, cargada de connotaciones políticas.
Ha sido jurado de los festivales en Valdivia (Chile), Cartagena (Colombia), Lima (Perú), Pasto (Colombia), Millenium Festival Bruselas (Bélgica) y El Espejo (Bogotá). Jurado de Cortometrajes para el FDC de Colombia.
Ha actuado en Rencontres, de Corine Serrano; Esas no son penas, de Anahi Hoeneisen y Daniel Andrade y Cuando me toque a mí, de Víctor Arregui.
Produce su nuevo largometraje documental Quito, ocho veces ella, y está escribiendo el guión de largometraje de ficción Harina de otro costal.
Ha trabajado en producción y gestión cultural: antes de ser director ejecutivo del Consejo Nacional de Cinematografía del Ecuador (CNCINE), se desempeñó como agregado cultural en la Embajada de su país en Colombia.
The Ecuadorian filmmaker Juan Martin Cueva is a founder member and executive director of the Cero Latitud Foundation and the Cero Latitud Quito Film Festival (Festival de Cine de Quito Cero Latitud). He is also a founder member of Cinememoria, and because of that has taken part of the organizing committee of the International Documentary Film Festival Encuentros de Otro Cine.
He has directed the documentaries Este maldito País (78 minutes, digital video, 2008; El lugar donde se juntan los polos (2002,53 minutes, Best Documentary at the International film festival of Valdivia (Festival Internacional de Cine de Valdivia), Chile, 2002; Best Screenplay at the Latin American Film Festival of Rosario, Argentine, 2003; Main Award of the Sur Realidades Film Festival, Bogota, 2004; and Brouillon d’un Reve prize of the Scam, Paris, 1999), Ningún ser humano es ilegal (2001) and Marineros (1997).
El lugar donde se juntan los polos is a very reflexive and intimist film that because of its stylistic and narrative approach could be also considered as a referent of the Ecuadorian cinema. In the form of a letter addressed to his children, the filmmaker narrates his family and wife’s story, which is torn between Latin America and France and charged with political implications.
The filmmaker has been judge of the Valdivia Film Festivals in 2004, Cartagena in 2006, Kunturnahui –Riobambain 2006 and of the short film competition of the Elcine Film Festival of Lima in 2007.
He has acted in Rencontre by Corine Serrano, Esas no son penas by Anahi Hoeneisen and Daniel Andrade and Cuando me toque a mi by Victor Arregui.
Before studying film direction in INSAS (Belgium), he studied sociology in Quito. He has also been professor at the America University at the Film and Performance School (Escuela de Cine y Televisión) of INCINE, the Diplomatic Academy of Ecuador, the
National University of Chimborazo, and the San Francisco University of Quito.
He produced a new feature length documentary film Quito, ocho veces ella and he wrote the screenplay for the narrative feature film Harina de otro costal.
