Eliane Caffé (1962-) studied Psychology, which was very useful to exercise her occupation as filmmaker and screen writer, which demands a deep knowledge of the behavior and motivation of the Human being.

She graduated from the Catholic university of Sao Paulo in psychology, during this period that reached from the end of the 1980´s to the beginning of the 1990´s, she received a master degree in The institute of Art and Aesthetic and Art theory, and took part in workshops at  the International filmand Television School in San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba.

Before making her first feature film, he directed the short films O nariz (1987), an adaptation of the short fable by Luiz Fernando Verissimo, Arabesco (1990) and the medium length film Caligrama (1995). His first feature film, with a screenplay of his own, was Kenoma (1998), the name of one of a native town that, in spite of its incorporation  to the modern world, enjoy  a primitive way of life. One of his inhabitants, the artisan Lineu, strives to fulfill one of the oldest dreams of the human being, to construct the machine of perpetual movement. About this film the director has expressed: “Kenoma grew out of the desire of knowing the reality of these characters insolated from modernity. The search of this man, deprived from access to any new technology, arise from  the conviction, somewhat naive,  that is more centered in what is  vital y essencial to life”.

Eliane Caffé´s second Feature film, and her last to date, was Narradores de Javé (2003), a comedy of customs that deals with the theme of identity and the sense of belonging to a place and culture, with a script from the director and Luiz Alberto de Abreu, and José Dumont in the leading role. It is the story of the inhabitants of one village, that face the official decisión of building a dike that would over flood the earth and soil where they live. Only if they prove that the village has historical and patrimonial values the dike construction would be suspended. Every body   begins to tell the legends and histories they remember, but all and each of the versions are contradicted.

Narradores de Javé won the FIPRESCI Prize at Fribourg Film Festival because of “its insightful description of the human desire for creating mythologies, smart screenplay and outstanding acting”.
