Egresado en 1999 de la Universidad Católica del Uruguay, donde cursó la carrera de Ciencias de la Comunicación y se licenció con la tesis ¿Y dónde está el plot point? Alternativas al modelo de guión clásico: estudio de caso del guión cinematográfico de 25 Watts. Tuvo una breve pero fructífera carrera como cineasta. Siendo estudiante de la universidad, conoce a Pablo Stoll, a quien estaría estrechamente vinculada su vida como realizador.
Comenzó haciendo cortos (Buenos y santos y Víctor y los elegidos), y debutó en el largometraje con 25 Watts (2001), retrato de la apatía y el desgano que dominaba a los jóvenes uruguayos de su generación; premiado con el Tiger Award en el Festival de Rotterdam, el Premio Coral a Mejor Ópera Prima en el Festival de La Habana y Mejor Actuación Masculina en el Festival de Cine Independiente de Buenos Aires.
Whisky, su segundo largometraje realizado tres años después, es una historia dominada por la melancolía, los fracasos y las soledades de la generación en la que podrían entrar sus padres. Para entonces ya se había unido al productor y editor Fernando Epstein en la empresa Control Z. Con esta cinta participó en la sección Un certain regard del Festival de Cannes, donde recibió el máximo premio de la prensa extranjera (Fipresci), y a partir de allí no dejó de cosechar premios en todo festival en el que se presentara (Tokio, La Habana, Tesalónica, Chicago y Huelva), además del Premio Goya (el Oscar español) a Mejor Película Extranjera de Habla Hispana (2005).
Con tan sólo dos largometrajes dirigidos, el dueto Rebella-Stoll marcó un antes y un después del cine uruguayo. Whisky fue la consagración, la confirmación de que estaban inaugurando un lenguaje nuevo en el cine nacional, aceptado tanto por críticos como por el público en general, una coincidencia muy pocas veces lograda en esta área de la cultura.
The Uruguayan filmmaker Juan Pablo Rebella (1974-) graduated in 1999 at Catholic University of Uruguay, where studied comunication science and got his degree with the thesis ¿Y dónde está el plot point? An alternative to the classic screenplay model: study of the case of the 25 Watts screenplay. He had a short but intense career as filmmaker. As he was university student he met Pablo Stoll, to whom his life would be closely linked as director.
He began making short films (Buenos y santos and Víctor y los elegidos), and debuted in the feature film with 25 Watts (2001), a portrait of the apathy and lack of horizon that dominated the Uruguayan youth of his generation; the film was an award winner of the Tiger Award in the Rotterdam Film Festival, the Coral Prize for best First work at the Havana film festival and Best Actor at the Buenos Aires Independient Film Festival.
Whisky, his second feature film, was made three years after his first work. It is the story of a generation dominated by the melancholy, failure and solitude, in which his parents could be included. At this moment he had joined the producer and editor Fernando Epstein of Control Z company. With this film he participated in Un certain regard section at the Cannes Film Festival, where he received the main award of the film critics (Fipresci). From this moment on, the film did not stop of being awarded at most of the festivals where it was screened. (Tokio, Havana,Tesalónica, Chicago and Huelva), and the Goya Prize (The Spain Oscar) for the Best Spanish-Speaking Foreign language Film in (2005).
With only two feature films directed, the duet Rebella-Stoll marked a new beginning for the Uruguayan film. Whisky established their reputation as the filmmakers who were creating a new language at the national cinema that was accepted by both the critics and the audience, a coincidence rarely achieved in this field of culture.
