Nació en Santiago de Chile y estudió Periodismo en la Pontificia Universidad Católica. Paralelamente realizó numerosos cursos y talleres de cine y actuación, conociendo muy de cerca el oficio actoral. En 1996, presenta el mediometraje El encierro (1996), producido por Nueva Imagen y el Ministerio de Educación.
Ha dirigido los telefilmes Juan Fariña, La leyenda (1998), El delantero romano (2001) y El pozo (2000). Por este último, obtuvo el Premio Altazor 2003 en la categoría de Artes Visuales de Televisión. Subterra (2003), es su primer largometraje.
Su obra ha recibido premios en el Festival Internacional de Biarritz, Francia, donde ganó el Premio Sol de Oro a la mejor interpretación femenina por la actuación de Paulina Gálvez; Festival Internacional de Viña del Mar, Chile, donde obtuvo los premios Gran Paoa a la Mejor Película, convirtiéndose en el primer filme chileno que se adjudica el máximo galardón de ese evento; Premio Paoa a la Mejor Fotografía; Premio del público y Premio de la Organización Católica Internacional de Cine (OCIC). Por esta cinta también obtuvo el Premio del Programa Ibermedia.
Marcelo Ferrari, born in Santiago, Chile, studied journalism at the Pontifical Catholic University (Pontificia Universidad Católica). At the same time he took courses and workshops on film and acting, getting very close to the profession of an actor. In 1996, he directed the medium length film El encierro (1996), produced by Nueva Imagen and the Ministry of Education (Ministerio de Educación). He directed the TV films Juan Fariña, La leyenda (1998), El delantero romano (2001) and El pozo (2000), thanks to which he received the Altazor Prize in 2003 in the category Visual Arts on Television. Subterra (2003) was his first feature film.
His work has receive awards at the Biarritz International Film Festival, France, where one of his film won the Golden Sun prize for the Best Actress to Paulina Gálvez; At the Viña del Mar International Film Festival (Festival Internacional de Viña del Mar), Chile, where he was awarded the prizes Gran Paoa to the Best Film, becoming the first Chilean film to receive this award, and also won the Paoa award for Best Photography; the Audience Award and the prize of the OCIC. He has also won the prize of the Ibermedia Program.
