Directora nacida en 1949. Su primer filme, el semidocumental Que bom te ver viva (1988), reveló en ella a una cineasta que se dedicaría a temas políticos y femeninos.
Mientras estudiaba Economía formó parte de un movimiento estudiantil. Con el decreto de diciembre de 1968 entró a formar parte del grupo MR-8. Encarcelada en 1971, fue torturada y permaneció en prisión durante tres años y medio. En 1979 viajó a Nicaragua, donde realizó el documental O pequeno exército louco, que concluyó cinco años más tarde, sobre la revolución sandinista.
Reveló sus preocupaciones políticas en Doces poderes (1996), donde analiza la campañas electorales desde el punto de vista del marketing que generan. En 2000 realizó Brava gente brasileira, sobre las relaciones entre colonizadores e indios en el interior de Brasil. En 2003 filmó Quase dois irmãos, un drama político sobre los conflictos entre la clase media y las favelas en tres épocas y situaciones diferentes, filme que le valió el premio al mejor director en el festival de Río. Al año siguiente estrenó el documental O olhar extranjero.

In 2007, was released her feature film Maré, Nossa História de Amor, a kind of musical updated version of Romeo and Juliet in the Rio's favelas (slums) with Brazilian hip-hop music and coreographies. The film was successfully screened at international film festivals and awarded for Best Music at Havana International Festival of the New Latin American Cinema, and Best Director at Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival (LALIFF) in 2008.
