First film in a trilogy of films about the history of slavery in Cuba. It is built around a critique of 19th century abolitionist Anselmo Suarez y Romero's novel, Francisco. It takes the novel to tasks for the sentimental romanticism of the violent realities of everyday plantation life. While the film deconstructs the narrative structures that underpin Suarez y Romero's humanistic philosophy, he cuts in segments of a historical exposé on the real conditions of slavery in Cuba.
