Estudia medicina, y abandona esa carrera por el drama y la interpretación, el ballet clásico y un postgrado de producción en California. En los años cincuenta monta un espectáculo y debuta como actor en El casto Susano (1952), de Joaquín Pardavé. En 1960 viaja a Cuba, donde filma el cortometraje Alfredo va a la playa y dirige y protagoniza El Show de Arau, para luego trasladarse a París donde estudia pantomima.
De nuevo en México dirige teatro, y antes de debutar en la realización, con El águila descalza (1969), revisa las cinematecas, para familiarizarse con el empleo del lenguaje cinematográfico. Luego, adapta la historieta Los supermachos, en la exitosa Calzoncín inspector (1973), para regresar a Cuba y realizar el documental Caribe, estrella y águila, en 1976.
La comedia de enredos chicanos Mojado Power (1979), además de varias incursiones en la actuación (La pandilla salvaje, El Topo, Romancing the Stone, Three Amigos) le dan continuación a su carrera en el cine, hasta que llega el exitazo Como agua para chocolate (1992), adaptación de la novela homónima de su esposa Laura Esquivel, quien además hizo el guión de esta mezcla de fantasía, erotismo, épica y costumbres.
Después, siguió produciendo sus filmes en Estados Unidos, hablados en inglés, y con grandes estrellas latinas: Un paseo por las nubes (1995), Picking Up the Pieces (1999) y la muy criticada Zapata, visión colorista y simplificadora del revolucionario mexicano, con la interpretación del cantante Alejandro Fernández.
Alfonso Arau ha recibido varios premios, entre ellos el Luminaria, en el Festival de Cine de Santa Fe, en diciembre de 2004.

He studies medicine and quits this course to devote himself to drama, acting and classical ballet and he also took a postgraduate course on production in California. In the 1950´s he created a show and made his debut as an actor in El casto Susano (1952) by Joaquín Pardavé. In 1960 he travels to Cuba, where he makes the short film Alfredo va a la playa and directs and stars El show de Arau, later he moves to Paris where he studies pantomime. Back in Mexico, he gets involved in theatre direction and before he made his debut in the making of El águila descalza, in 1969, he revises the film libraries to get familiar with the use of cinematographic language. Later, he adapts the comics Los supermachos, into the succesful Calzoncín inspector (1973), and goes back to Cuba to make the documentary Caribe, estrella y águila, in 1976. The situation comedy about Chicanos, Mojado Power (1979), together with various experiences in acting (La pandilla salvaje, El Topo, Romancing the Stone, Three Amigos) give continuation to his career at the cinema, until the big success obtained with Como agua para chocolate (1992), an adaptation of the homonymous novel written by his wife Laura Esquivel, who was also the script writer of this mixture of fantasy, erotism, epic and customs. Later on, he continues to produce his films in the United States, using the English language and with great Latin stars:
Un paseo por las nubes (1995), Picking Up the Pieces (1999) and the very much criticized film Zapata, a colourist and simplified version of the Mexican revolutionary, with the interpretation of singer Alejandro Fernández.
Alfonso Arau has received several prizes, among them the Prize Luminaria at the Santa Fe Film Festival in December, 2004.
