    Juana y Juan, madre e hijo, llegan a Caracas procedentes de un lejano pueblo. Están sin trabajo y viven en un mísero rancho, en un cerro de los que circundan la ciudad. La señora Petra le ofrece a Juana un trabajo de sirvienta, pero no lo puede aceptar por tener una mano enferma. Petra trae para que la cure a Encarnación, un brujo negro fugitivo de la justicia. Encarnación se aprovecha de la ingenuidad de Juana para quedarse escondido en su casa.Adaptación de la obra teatral homónima, original de Román Chalbaud.

    Slum dwellings made of corrugated aluminum and in some cases, of cardboard and mud, provide a setting for this routine story of urban versus rural life. Called ~ranchos~ in Venezuelan parlance, the dwellings rise up on the hills that surround Caracas, the capital of the nation. An older widow decides to move to this slum area in an effort to bring her son to the city and to the advantages of better schools and job opportunities. This flight to the capital is common, but what she encounters is so depressing and discouraging and negative that the woman succumbs to alcohol and worse. As she deteriorates and finally dies, her son reconsiders her viewpoint on city life.
