The professional career of Raúl Ruiz, the most famous, prolific and European-like Chilean filmmaker, began in the avant-garde theater of his native country, where, from 1956 to  1962, he wrote more than one hundred works, even when he did not direct any of them.. Nobody knows, not even the Ruiz himself how many film integrate his filmography as director. But it is almost sure he has directed more than one hundred films, accounting short, feature, narrative and documentary films. Some of them were never finished or exhibited. Most of them has never been screened in Chile, probably because Ruiz´s film art considered too much experimental and less commercial by distributors.

He debuted in film directing shorts from 1960 to 1964, which were unfinished. In 1968, with the release of his first finished feature film Tres tristes tigres, he became the leading figure of the emerging Chilean cinema, together with Miguel Littin and Aldo Francia. Ruiz studied theology and law for a short period of time,  also brief was his  attendance to the Universidad de Litoral, from which he run away as he realized that attention was focused on documentary, militant and denunciation cinema.

A leftist committed with the Marxist government of Salvador Allende, even when never dogmatic or supporter of the socialist realism, Ruiz had to abandon Chile during the fascist military coup in 1973. He lived in exile in Paris from this year on. Soon he found a forum for his ideas in the European television. His first European success came with La hipótesis del cuadro robado (1978); a bizarre film in  black and white, an adaptation of a novel by Pierre Klossowski, constructed according to the style of the tableaux vivants, which tells the story of an the disappearance of a enigmatic painting of the Nineteenth century.

As a manipulator of the narrative conventions, and intellectual speculations that change their rules continuously,  Ruiz surprises by the diversity of his influences. Apart from the adaptations of Klossowski, has been inspired by the literary work of Franz Kafka (La colonia penal, 1971), Racine (Bérenice, 1984), Shakespeare (Richard III, 1984), Calderón (La memoria de las apariencias: La vida es un sueño, 1986), Robert Louis Stevenson (Treasure Island, 1986), Orson Welles (his F for Fake is an antecedent of  La hipótesis del cuadro robado, 1978), and the B series movie of Hollywood (Roger Corman was executive producer of El territorio, 1983).

Under the influence of the fantasizing tradition of the Latin American  literature (Gabriel García Márquez, Jorge Luis Borges, and Alfonso Reyes has been quoted as his  influences), Ruiz is a poet, creator of  fantastic images, whose films easily pass from the realm of fantasy to reality, and from the oneiric to  the intellectual wakefulness. As Godard (who the filmmaker recognizes as one of his early influence and who in turn is also indebted with B series movies), Ruiz made not any kind of differentiation between “elevated culture” of Racine or Calderon and the “low art” of Roger Corman.

After the end of the dictatorship in Chile, Ruiz has returned periodically to the country.  In this regard the filmmaker has stated “I live in Chile, but I travel for eleven month of the year to Europe”. Recently Ruiz has developed different activities as writing novels, comic strips, and delivered lectures at universities.  He decided to express by writing his ideas about filmmaking in 1995 with his essay book Poética del cine. In 1999, he made what is maybe his most ambitious work, an adaptation of the work of Marcel Proust. The feature film Le temp retrouve, granted him the credential of an important and prestigious filmmaker, in a way, out of the classification of “a director for the specialists circuit” he was included in. Cofralandes, a Chilean rhapsody, where he dealt again with one of his early fetishistic subjects: the condition of being Chilean.  Night Across the Street was his last film.
