  • José Massip

    Hombre de sólida formación académica, se graduó de Licenciado en Filosofía y Letras en la Universidad de La Habana y en Sociología en la Universidad de Harvard, Estados Unidos. Cineasta, ensayista, crítico de teatro, cine y literatura. En 1950, participa en la fundación de la sociedad cultural Nuestro Tiempo, de cuya revista fue editor. Colabora en la filmación del documental El Mégano. Es fundador del ICAIC. Trabaja como documentalista y en 1964 realiza su primer largometraje de ficción. Durante varios años presidió la sección de Cine, Radio y Televisión de la Unión Nacional de Escritores y Artistas de Cuba. Por su meritoria trayectoria como pedagogo, realizador cinematográfico y ensayista ha recibido la Distinción por la Cultura Nacional, la Réplica del machete mambí de Máximo Gómez y en el año 2003 se le otorgó el Premio Caracol de la UNEAC por su dedicación al cine a lo largo de su vida.

    Es considerado el cineasta cubano que más profundamente ha tratado la vida de José Martí, a partir del largometraje de ficción Páginas del diario de José Martí (1971) y Los tiempos del joven Martí (1960).

    Entre sus obras más premiadas se encuentran Historia de un ballet (Suite Yoruba), por la que obtuvo, entre otros el Gran Premio Paloma de Oro en el Festival Internacional de Cine Documental y Cortometraje de Leipzig, RDA. en 1962, y el Primer Premio Medalla de Oro en el Certamen Internacional de Cine Documental Iberoamericano y Filipino en Bilbao, España, en 1964; así como Madina Boe, por la que mereció el Primer Premio Dragón de Plata en el  Festival Internacional de Cine de Cortometraje de Cracovia, Polonia, 1969, la Copa del Comité Central de Sangkun (ex-aequo) en el Festival Internacional de Cine de Phnom Penh, Cambodia, 1969, y el Premio Fructuoso Gelabert del Cine Club Catalán (al conjunto de filmes cubanos presentados) en la Semana Internacional de Cinema.     Man of a strong academic background, he graduated in Philosophy at the University of Havana and in Sociology at Harvard University, USA. He became a filmmaker, writer and critic of film, theater and literature. In 1950, he participated in the founding of the cultural society Nuestro Tiempo, the magazine of which he edited. He helped in the filming of the documentary El Mégano. He is a founder of ICAIC, worked there as a documentary filmmaker and in 1964 he made his first feature film. For several years he chaired the Section of Film, Radio and Television of the National Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba. For his outstanding career as a teacher, filmmaker and essayist, he has received the Distinction for the National Culture, the replica of Máximo Gómez’s machete and in 2003 he was awarded the Caracol Prize of the UNEAC for his dedication to film during his whole life.

    He is considered the Cuban filmmaker who has treated the life of José Martí from the most profound perspective in his feature films Páginas del diario de José Martí (1971) and Los tiempos del joven Martí (1960).

    Among his most prized works are Historia de un Ballet (Suite Yoruba), for which he won the Golden Dove First Prize at the International Festival of Documentaries and Short Films, in Leipzig, GDR in 1962 and the First Prize at the International Latin American and Filipino Documentary Film Competition in Bilbao, Spain, 1964. Madina Boe also won the First Prize Silver Dragon at the International Short Films Festival in Krakow, Poland, 1969; the Cup of the Sangkun Central Committee (ex-aequo) at the Phnom Penh International Film Festival in Cambodia, 1969 and the Prize of the Cinema Club Fructuoso Gelabert Catalan (to all Cuban films shown) in the International Week of Cinema in Barcelona, Spain, 1975.
