Nace en Barcelona, España, pero ha pasado gran parte de su vida en Guanajuato, México. Se apasiona por el cine desde su adolescencia; tenía 14 años de edad cuando realiza su primer corto.

Su primer cortometraje, Amarrados (2002), le valió el premio a la mejor película y mejor director en el Newport Beach International Film Festival y el primer lugar en el Voladero Film Festival, Monterrey, México.

Fue asistente de dirección del cineasta mexicano Carlos Reygadas en la realización de la película Batalla en el cielo (2004), que compite por la palma de Oro del Festival de Cine de Cannes 2005.

Dirige la película Sangre (2005), en colaboración con Carlos Reygadas y Mantarraya Producciones. Esta cinta fue presentada en el Cinemart del Festival Internacional de Cine de Rotterdam y fue seleccionada también para participar en la sección Cine en Construcción del Festival de San Sebastián, y en los Encuentros de Cine Latinoamericanos de Toulouse. La película también se presentó en la selección oficial Un Certain Regard, del Festival de Cannes 2005, donde fue recibida calurosamente y recibió el Premio de la Federación Internacional de la Prensa Cinematográfica. También con esta película gana el premio Alejandro de Plata en el Festival Internacional de Cine de Tesalónica, en Grecia.

En 2008 Amat Escalante presenta la pelìcula Los bastardos dentro del marco del Festival de Cannes. En ese mismo año Los Bastardos gana en el Festival de Cine de Morelia, con un jurado presidido por Cristian Mungiu.

Amat Escalante (1979-) was born in Barcelona, Spain, but has spent most of his life in Guanajuato, Mexico. He became passionate lover of cinema since he was an adolescent; He was only 14 years old, when he made his first film.

His first short film, Amarrados (2002), got the prize for Best Film and Best Director at the Newport Beach International Film Festival and the first place at the Voladero Film Festival, Monterrey, Mexico.

He was assistant director to Mexican filmmaker Carlos Reygadas in the film Batalla en el cielo (2004), which competed for the Golden Palm of the Cannes Film Festival, 2005.

He directed the film Sangre (2005) in collaboration with Carlos Reygadas and Mantarraya Productions. This film was presented at the Cinemart of the Rotterdam International Film Festival  and was also selected to participate in the section Cine en Construción (Work in Progress) of the San Sebastián, Film Festival, Spain, and in the Encounters of Latin America Cinema of Toulouse. The film is also presented in the official selection Un Certain Regard of the Cannes Film Festival in 2005. Sangre was enthusiastically received at the Festival of Cannes, when it participated in the selection of  the section Un Certain Regard at Cannes, and received the Prize of the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI). With this film he also won the Prize Silver Alexander at the International Thessaloniki Film Festival in Greece.

In 2008, Escalante presents the film Los bastardos at the Cannes Film Festival. In the same year, this film won at the Morelia Film Festival (Festival de cine de Morelia), with a jury presided over by the Romanian filmmaker Cristian Mungiu.
