Walter Salles was born on April 12, 1956 in Río de Janeiro,Brazil, the son of the banker and ambassador Moreira Salles and brother of the also filmmaker João Moreira Salles. He grew up in France and later in the United States, before he finally settled in Brazil. He studied economics and audiovisual communication in the California University. Salles was successful in the film industry and, before that, on television as director of successful documentaries precisely in the period of the biggest crisis on the Brazilian audiovisual, i.e. from the end of the 1980s to the beginning of the 1990s. His first film goes back to 1985 with the title of Krajcberg, O poeta dos vestígios. Also in 1985 she founded together with his brother the production company VideoFilmes. At  the same time that he made feature films, Salles made other short films as Socorro Nobre (1995) and Adão ou Somos todos filhos da terra (1999).

The visual attempt to reveal the Brazilian identity, the exile, the violence of marginality are the  main themes of his debut film, Arte mortal (1991), a thriller set in Río de Janeiro. In spite that his work as documentary maker (an approach he never lost completely although he devoted himself to narrative film) was made mainly in Europe , as he come back to Brazil devoted himself to direct feature films. He soon managed to direct some of the best narrative film works of this period: Tierra extranjera (1995), codirected with Daniela Thomas, won some international awards and symbolized the rebirth of the Brazilian cinema after a dark period of crisis.

His next narrative feature film was Central Do Brasil (1998), the most internationally acclaimed film of all times, and winner of the Golden Bear of the Berlin Film Festival, of the Jury Special Prize in Havana, of a an Oscar nomination as Best Foreign Language Film, a BAFTA award in the United Kingdom, the César award in France. Also this year was released Midnight, which he wrote and directed and which would be winner of the main award in the event Cinema Brazil. He kept the same Standard of quality in his following work, Abril despedazado, also awarded with much important international recognitions.

His next film was a sounding success all over the world, something that   was unusual for a Brazilian film. In 2004, co-produced with Argentina, Chile and the United States Diarios de motocicleta, spoken in Spanish, inspired in the young experiences of Che Guevara, in a journey he made with his friend Alberto Granados through different Latin American countries. The film was nominated to the Independent Spirit Award in the United States.

One of the most recent film experiences of Salles to date is the Hollywood remake of a Japanese horror film Dark Water, and the production of the Brazilian feature film Hermanas. In spite that many blame him for the commercial interest of his projects, and the many contacts and acclaims within the United States, all this has reverted in favor of a cinema that praises the national values and has contributed to an effective development of Brazilian cinema,  through the promotion of new talents. For example, he generally works with the director Daniela Thomas and the director of photography Walter Carvalho. Walter Salles is an essential figure of the Latin American audiovisual universe.
