  • Josué Méndez
    (Perú, 1976)



    Nació Lima, en 1976. Estudió Cine y Estudios Latinoamericanos en la Universidad de Yale, y en la Escuela de Artes Tisch, de la Universidad de Nueva York, en Estados Unidos.

    Luego, realiza los cortometrajes Solo buenos amigos (1997), Dreams Other Adagios (1998) y Parelisa (1999). Días de Santiago (2004), su primer largometraje, se estrenó mundialmente en el año 2004 en la Competencia Oficial del Festival Internacional de Cine de Rotterdam, Holanda; siendo seleccionado a participar en más de 100 festivales por todo el mundo y distribuido comercialmente en más de 15 países. Días de Santiago fue la Selección Oficial del Perú para los Premios Oscar de la Academia del 2004, y representó a su país en la selección Tous les Cinemas du Monde, del Festival de Cine de Cannes del 2005. La película ganó más de 35 premios internacionales, entre ellos el Premio FIPRESCI en Friburgo y el de Mejor Película en Kerala, Miami, Providence, Lima y Montreal, convirtiéndose en la película peruana más premiada de la historia.

    Entre los años 2000 y 2004, Josué realizó la edición del cortometraje Páramo, de Daniel Ró, y de los largometrajes Bala Perdida, de Aldo Salvini y Doble Juego, de Chicho Durant. En el año 2006 co-escribió junto a Aldo Miyashiro las primeras dos temporadas de La Gran Sangre, serie de televisión producida por Capitán Pérez y transmitida por Frecuencia Latina, y dirigió la segunda temporada de dicha producción.

    Dioses (2008), el segundo largometraje de Josué, fue desarrollado en la Cinefondation, el programa residencial del Festival de Cine de Cannes, y coproducido con Argentina, Francia y Alemania. De la misma manera, entre 2006 y 2007, Josué se benefició de un año de asesoría con el director británico Stephen Frears como parte de la Iniciativa Artística Rolex para Maestros y Discípulos, la cual eligió a Josué entre directores jóvenes de todo el mundo. La iniciativa se puso en marcha en 2002 y es un programa filantrópico bienal que reúne a maestros famosos con artistas más jóvenes de gran talento en una etapa crucial de sus carreras. Frears ofreció apoyo y orientación a Méndez en el rodaje de su película Dioses, en Lima.

    Además de dirigir publicidad y videos corporativos, ha sido asistente de dirección en teatro, y participado como docente en diversos centros académicos nacionales e internacionales.


    Josué Médez (1976-) was born in Lima, Perú. He studied Film and Latin American studies at the Yale University and at the Tisch Art Schoo of the New York University in the USA.

    After he graduated, he directed his first short films Solo buenos amigos (1997), Dreams Other Adagios (1998) and Parelisa (1999). His first feature film Días de Santiago (2004), which had its world premiere at the official competition of the Rotterdam International Film Festival, Netherland, was selected to be shown in more than a hundred festivals around the world and commercially distributed in more than 15 countries. This movie was Peru´s official selection to represent the country at the Best Foreign Language Film category of The Hollywood Academy Awards, Oscar in 2004. It also represented its country in the selection Tous les Cinemas du Monde at the Cannes Film Festival in 2005. The film received more than 35 international awards, among them,  the FIPRESCI prize of the Fribourg Film Festival and best picture in Kerala, Miami, Providence, Lima and Montreal, and in this  way became the most awarded Peruvian movie of all times.

    From 2000 to 2004, Josué worked in the edition of the short film Páramo by Daniel Ró, and the feature film Bala Perdida by Aldo Salvini and Doble Juego by Chicho Durant. In  2006 he co-wrote with Aldo Miyashiro the first two seasons of the TV series La Gran Sangre, produced by Capitán Pérez and broadcasted  by  Frecuencia Latina. He directed the second season of this TV production.

    Dioses (2008), Josué´s  second feature film was developed as part of the Cinefondation,  residency  program of the Cannes Film Festival, and coproduced with Argentina, France and Germany. Between 2006 and 2007, Josué  benefited by a  year`s training with the British director Stephen Frears, as part of the the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative, which chose Méndez among  young filmmaker from around the world. This Rolex initiative, which began in 2002, is a philanthropic program that brings together famous masters and talented young artists at a decisive stage of their careers. Stephen Frears offered support and assistance to Méndez while shooting Dioses in Lima.

    For many years, Méndez has also directed commercials and corporate advertisements. He has worked as theatre assistant director and has taught in different national and international educational institutions .
