Andrés Wood nació en Chile, en 1965. Estudió Economía en la Universidad de Chile, luego de lo cual viajó a Nueva York, donde hizo un curso de cine. A su regreso escribió y dirigió la película Historias del fútbol (1987), por la que ganó una mención especial al Mejor Director Nuevo en el Festival Internacional de Cine de Donostia-San Sebastián. Más tarde escribió, produjo y dirigió la película La fiebre del loco (2001), por la que obtuvo el premio al mejor director en la Mostra de Cinema Llatinoamericà de Lleida. Su obra más conocida es la película Machuca (2004), la que representó a Chile en los Premios Goya y en los Oscar, y fue nominada a los premios Ariel, en 2005, en la categoría de Mejor Película Iberoamericana.
Machuca, ambientada en 1973, en Santiago, en la época del gobierno socialista de Allende y el posterior golpe militar de Pinochet, cuenta la historia de dos amigos, uno de ellos pobre (Pedro Machuca), quien es integrado a un colegio rico y elitista gracias a un proyecto de integración social encabezado por el director del colegio, el padre McEnroe. Es un drama con tintes humorísticos y elementos autobiográficos, como escribiera Wood: “El 11 de septiembre de 1973 yo tenía ocho años, y de cuarenta compañeros de curso al menos quince vivían en los poblados chabolistas de la ribera del río Mapocho, a la salida de mi colegio. Fue una experiencia enriquecedora, a veces tormentosa y cruel, pero también maravillosa; llena de contradicciones, como las que se vivían en el país”. Para hacer la película “mé basé en la memoria subjetiva, en el relato oral y también en libros, diarios y documentales".
"La idea nunca fue hacer la versión oficial de esos años. Yo no soy la persona más objetiva para medirlos fríamente. Para mí fue una experiencia vital y totalmente marcadora. Creo que la forma de implementarse no fue la más correcta, pero incluso así, pienso que es algo que sí tuvo resultados muy positivos".

When he returned to Chile directed the narrative feature film Historias del fútbol (1987), which won a special mention to the Best New Director at the San Sebastian International Film Festival. Later he wrote, produced and directed the film La fiebre del loco (2001), for which was awarded as the Best Director in the Lleida Latin American Film Show (Mostra de Cinema Llatinoamericà de Lleida). In 2004 directed the feature film Machuca, which represented Chile at the Oscar and Goya awards, and was nominated in 2005 to the Ariel awards in Mexico, in the category of Best Iberian and Latin American Film.
Machuca, set in 1973, in Santiago, during the times of the socialist government of Salvador Allende and the subsequent military dictatorship of the Pinochet´s government. The film tells the story of two friends, one of them a poor kid (Pedro Machuca) who enters a selected and rich school thanks to a project of social integration directed by the school head master, the priest McEnroe. The film is a drama with humorous touches and autobiographical elements, as Wood wrote: “On September 11, 1973 I had 6 years old, of a total of forty, fifteen of my schoolmates lived in shanty towns of the bank of the Mapocho river far away from school. To meet them was an enriching experience, sometimes turbulent and cruel, but also wonderful, full of contradictions, as the ones experience in Chile at the time”. In order to made this film “I used the subjective memory, oral tales and also books, diaries and documentaries".
"My idea was never to offer the official version of these years. I am not the kind of objective person to asses them impartially. For me this was a decisive and vital experience. I think the way we assessed them was not the best, but at the end had a positive result”.
