Matías Bize, born in Santiago, Chile, is a graduate of the Film School (Escuela de Cine). He was yet a film student, when he directed only at the age of 23 the narrative feature film Sábado, una película en tiempo real (2003), his first work, which won four awards at the Mannheim Film Festival (including the Rainer Werner Fassbinder Prize), and received an excellent audience and critics acclaim.
His second narrative feature film En la cama (2005), a Chilean-German coproduction released at the Locarno International Film Festival, was winner at the Valladolid International Film Festival (Festival Internacional de Cine de Valladolid), and was also recognized as the Best Film of the 17th edition of the Viña del Mar International Film Festival (Festival Internacional de Cine de Viña del Mar) in Chile. The film was shot in the enclosed space of a single location —a hotel room— which according to the director allowed him to deepen into the story and pay closer attention to the screenplay that is the element of a film he is most interested at.
The filmmaker’s next feature film, Lo bueno de llorar (2007), a Spanish-Chilean coproduction, was also shown at many international film festivals and awarded at the Valdivia International Film Festival with the Critics Award, and a special mention.
Bize’s last film to this date, La vida de los peces, was released in Chile in June 2010 with a positive reception from the critics and audience. The reviewer Antonela Estévez, stated in the film website Cinechile.cl: “with only thirty year and four feature films, we can assure that Matias Bize has entered the selected group of Chilean film authors, accompanying Ruiz, Guzmán, Caiozzi, Wood and a few others”.
