    The Holy family
    By Joel Poblete

It is difficult to write about this film in this moment. It has receive so many praises, so many press articles about it and interviews to its director and cast have been written that any recommendation or comment takes the risk to sound redundant. And in my case, it is even more complex, because from its premiere in Valdivia and its participation in the Viña del Mar Film Festival, everybody in the Mabuse film magazine was seduced by Sebastian Campos´s debut in the feature film. After that most of my colleagues told me marvelous things about this film, I was surely one of the few people from the film environment that had not still seen La sagrada familia. And after listening to so many people saying that at least it was the best Chilean film of the last  years, that it would be a landmark in the domestic film evolution or similar assertions, it is easy then to understand that I approached this film with a mixture of great expectations, uncertainty and curiosity.

Fortunately, I was not disappointed and after seeing it more than a couple of times, even I am not. Although I believe that praises have been a little excessive and maybe it will be necessary to leave that the time judges its transcendence for our irregular film history, La sagrada familia is undoubted an attractive solid film that seduces and entice in a way that few national film has managed to do in the last time, and furthermore it ssucceeds in each one of its artistic, aesthetic and narrative motivations. And that is quite enough for what our film industry has accustomed us.

Almost everything it has been published is true: The spontaneity and freshness level that Campos achieved, the  excellent performances of his very committed cast, the surprising  visuals and argument coherence so difficult to reach in a project with an screenplay  that scarcely  had a dozen pages that limited to guide and structure the dramatic situations more than to establish false and no credible dialogues, the freedom of the movements of a nervous and searching camera,  that can easily make the most unawared spectators dizzy. But mainly the whole film simpleness and plainness that is translated in a realistic, daily, humble mise en scene as the story that supports the plot.

The traditional escape from Santiago capital city during the three days of Easter by a very recognizable family in her customs and behavior is the starting point for revealing and cathartic weekend in which each one of the seven leading characters will face with their own prejudices, fears and internal frustrations. La sagrada familia can be considered from different points of view as a sharp and implacable approach to the double moral and the hypocrisies that characterize us as a society, as a faithful portrait of the the contemporary youth’s lacks and emotional conflicts, as a telluric look to the weak balances that can support a family, or even as polemic critic to the Catholic values that govern the moral of most of the Chileans, or rather a critic to the way in which that values are experienced and preserved. In this sense, as a Catholic, I think that it is necessary to place everything in its context, and I find that the publicized  and supposed film transgressions underlined by the press (drugs, sex and homosexuality in the middle of what must be a weekend of withdrawal or of respect to traditions, which the priest  repeats several times, or the character of Marco playing to be crucified the Good Friday night, making fun the following day of the “gentleman who will resuscitate tomorrow", and to whom he calls "sucker") it should not cause so much impact or to offend anybody, because they are very coherent with the environment and with the story wants to tell.

Each one of the mentioned aspects are valid and they are present in the film, allowing a datailed analysis and more than a personal theory, but I prefer to keep the life that exudes the universe portrayed by Campos, with those well delineated and credible characters, with that melancholy that is present in the film from the beginning to the end, beyond the frequent touches of humor that wake up the spectator’s hilarity, particularly always that Sofia, the uninhibited  Patricia López 's character, appears.

It is true that some dramatic situations are better developed than others, or that not all the characters reach the same importance or have a completely convincing resolution, as it happens with the homosexual tie that arises among the two law students (by the way very wel prformed by Miranda and Diocares); even it is a pity the soon disappearance of the character of the mother, both for the Coca Guazzini´s  great performance and because the implication in the story of this character (although it is not venturous to say that her presence  influences in the rest of the plot more than it seems at first sight). But this is not obstacle to say that in La sagrada familia we have some of the most complete and believable characters that we have ever seen in our cinema, for a long time.

" Nothing is gratuitousin this world",  says the young Marco (the excellent Néstor Cantillana)  in a moment of the film, and one feel the temptation to believe the  same when we  analyze the film, no matter tha is known the degree of improvisation and spontaneity grade that prevailed in the shooting. Either because we discover how La sagrada familia begins  with the awakening of a dream and also ends with this dream as  the indirect possibility to find  an exit or a liberation (the "emancipation" that one the  law students have mentioned before), or for the symbols and contrasts that we can find in the story: Among the first we find the rabbits, the Easter eggs, the sea,  the I Ching that talks about having "the corage to look at things just as they are" in order to find the light that shows the way... and among the second ones, the differences between  the two  feminine characters, one because, Sofía,  talks nineteen to the dozen, while the other one, Rita, is the "silent presence” who  has been always there and has chosen the selective silence.

But, perhaps, as Sofía says, after receiving her boyfriend comments about her exaggerated performance of theater monologue, here “it is not necessary to understand, it is necessary to feel." And in fact it is tremendously  possible to feel and to be touched by the truth that transmits the image and conversations of La sagrada familia. Those moments in which Campos trusts in the intensity of the looks of his actors who contemplate in silence something that we can sense, while we listen the delicate harmonies of the beautiful and subtle Javiera´s sound track, Los imposibles which match perfectly with the melancholy of many moments, like the revelry that the youths reach at night after tasting drug or particularly when in different occasions three of the main characters revive the tradition of the Easter eggs. The music here is as essential as the effective and expressive editing that the own director achieved after revising hours and hours  of films, which not only allows amusing moments (as when an orgasm is continued by the toast in a dinner) but also to endow the film of a sustained rhythm very appropriate to the search for the daily life expression.

Although in La sagrada familia  the dialogues are so important, the silences and the looks are  decisive too, even when, for example, Marco and his mother get in touch  through a glass or when in more than one ocassion we see the characters moving away or going up or down the road. The weekend that the film portrays, in spite of being in a certain way a personal "Calvary" for Marcos, the son,  – full of incidents, and marked by a father that only considers him as “an architect project” and the presence of three women who provide him different kinds of affection--, will become finally a renovating and vital experience, as memorable and beloved as this Chilean film, one of the best of the recent local films.
