    By Gabriel García Márquez

Gabriel García Márquez did not participate in the Seminar, but this text fits wonderfully   to the theme of the event. For that reason we have decided publish it – after previous consultation with the author – as if it were his contribution to the debate, in which he tells his courtship with the seventh art, from The film writer's dimness.

In Fregene, a marine town near Rome died recently my very dear friend Franco Solinas, one of the most qualified film writers of our time. I think that he did not could finish his last screenplay in which he had worked together with the filmmaker Costa Gavras, about the current and passionate issue of the Palestine people without land. Several world-famous directors should stay waiting their turns, they used to accept the long and unforeseeable waits caused by Franco Solinas' numerous commitments. His was a strange case in this environmenr: he never accepted to work in more than a screenplay at the same time, and to this he consecrated all his energy, his infinite patience and his implacable self-criticism, during a time that was impossible to calculate before hand.

A year of daily work was his average time for each screen play. His masterpiece was, without doubt, La batalla de Argel, which he wrote for the filmmaker Gillo Pontecorvo, for whom he also wrote Quemada. For Costa Gavras he wrote State of Siege, and for Joseph Losey  he wrote Mr. Klein.  The list of his films is not very long, but they have a very high quality. According to my taste, he was one of the most rigorous professionals in one of the most difficult and less rewarded trades, and also one of the most ingrate. As prove the fact that the news of Salinas’s has went unnoticed, even for the specialized publications, and only very few personal friends and admirers  know for  certain whom we have lost.

This is, anyway, an opportunity to meditate on the film writers' obscure destiny. Nobody knows who we are, unless we are known as writers of other things, and in this case, themselves tends to think that their work for the film is secondary. A resource to survive. The film magazines pay attention mainly to the director - not without reason - and in few occasion they remember that, before arriving to the screen, all film has to pass the test of the written language. So are the writers, and not the directors, who offer the literary base that support the film. Something, by the way, that is not good neither for the literature or the film.

After  the Second World War, the film writers had their place in the sun with the protagonism of  the screenwriter Cesare Zavattini; an imaginative Italian with an artichoke heart who infused the cinema of his time with an unprecedented blow of humanity.  The director that created his best plots was Vittorio de Sica, his great friend, and they were so identified that it was not easy to know where one finished and the other one began. They were the two biggest stars of the neorealism; which in its heaven has other figures as radiant as Roberto Rosellini.Together they Bicycle thieves, Miracle in Milan, Umberto D and other unforgettable films. Then, people talked about Zavattini´s film in the same way that they talk about Bertolucci´s film: as if Zavattini were the director  of them. In fact, in those times, there were very few Italian films that did not pass through Zavattini´s purifying rake, he always appeared only in the last place of the credits, because they were arranged alphabetically. He was so prolific that, according to the testimony of people who knew him at that time, he had an enormous crammed cabinet full with synthetic plots in cards. The producers, always suffering the  lacks of topics, desperate went to see him. In some occasion, one of them requested Zavattini with urgency a love story and he asked him very seriously: "Do you want it without a little dog or with a little dog?”  A whole fanatic of film generation went to study to the Experimental Film Center (Centro Sperimentale de Cinematografia), in Rome, with the hope that were Zavattini who teach them.

It was an exception. In fact, the film writer's destiny is in secret glory of obscurity, and only the ones who resign themselves to that inner exile has some possibility of surviving without bitterness. No work demands a bigger humility. Even more: it should be considered as a transitory factor in the film creation and it is proof of the subordinate condition of the film art. As long as it needs a writer, i.e. the assistant of a neighbouring art, it will not be able to fly with their own wings. That is one of its limits. The other one, and still more serious, of course, is its industrial commitment. The own director ends up realizing, sooner or later, that he neither could do very much within the strait creation margin allowed by the producer’s bills, on one hand, and the ghosts borrowed from the screenwriter on the other. It is a miracle that he can still have the impression that he has been able to express himself thoroughly, deep down inside that rarefied alley.  For that reason it surprises  me so much, and I am glad so much, every time when  I find a film that made me cry, that is what one yearn for in the bottom of our soul when the lights fade in the movie theater.

In these days of so many interviews, a question that has been incessantly repeated is the one of my relation with the film. My only answer has always been the same: they are those of an ill-matched marriage. That is to say, I cannot live without the cinema and neither with it, and, considering the the amount of offers that I receive from the producers, the same happens to the cinema with me. Since an early age, when  the colonel Nicolás Márquez took me to watch Tom Mix´s movies in Aracataca, my curiosity for the cinema emerged. It began, as with all the children of that time, by demanding that they took me behind the screen to discover how were the bowels of the creation. My confusion was very great when I only saw the same images at the other on screen, which produced me an impression of a vicious circle from which I could not recover myself for a long time. When I finally discovered which was really the mystery, it tormented me the idea that the film was a more complete expression means than the literature, and that certainty did not allow me to sleep in peace for a long time. For that reason I was one of those so many that travelled to Rome with the illusion of learning Zavattini´s secret magic and also one of those that barely achieved to see him from a distance. By the time, I have already won in Colombia a battle in favor of the cinema when I arrived to El espectador de Bogotá newspaper, in 1954, the only possible film critic was the indulgent one. Other way, the exhibitors threatened to suspend the film announcements, which are for the Press a considerable source of income. With the support the newspaper directors, who assumed the risk, I wrote the first regular film critic column for a year. The exhibitors that at the beginning received my unfavorable notes as if they were a terrible concoction ended up admitting the convenience of having a well informed public.

It was also with the hope of making films that I came to Mexico more than twenty years ago. Even after having written screen plays that then  I did not recognize on the screen, I was still convinced that the film would be the liberation valve of my specters. It took a long time to convince myself that it was not so. A morning on October 1965, tired of seeing myself without finding myself, I sat down in front of the typewriter as every day, but this time, I did not get up again after eighteen months, with the final manuscripts of One hundred Years of Solitude (Cien años de soledad) in my hands. In that voyage through the desert I understood that there was not a more splendid and singular act of freedom that to sit down and invent the world in front of a typewriter.
