El quinto Festival de Cine Juvenil del Caribe (Caribbean Youth Film Festival) abre inscripciones el 24 de julio. Desde su creación hace cinco años, su popularidad ha rebasado los límites locales, y  despertado el interés de los jóvenes cineastas de todo el Caribe.

Colin Weekes, fundador y director del Festival, dijo que la participación ha ido creciendo desde obras nacionales a regionales,  con un gran énfasis los jóvenes del Caribe Oriental.

"El Festival está ahora abierto al Caribe y son más las personas que lo conocen y están participando; lo que demuestra la fuerza y el empuje que tienen los realizadores emergentes,  y el potencial que existe para el crecimiento de la industria audiovisual", dijo Sr. Weekes. "No tenemos ningún problema con respecto al número de participantes, en realidad vamos despacio, es importante tomar las cosas con calma, y eso es lo que estamos haciendo. Queremos asegurarnos de que tengamos una base sólida y que no programemos actividades que no podamos manejar”.

Weekes afirmó que el proceso para participar en el Festival es simple. "Siempre ha sido un festival  abierto a todos. Las bases son sencillas. La tecnología está en la punta de nuestros dedos, y queremos que la juventud la utilice de manera positiva, ya sea a través del teléfono o una cámara DSLR. Los participantes podrán enviar filmes de hasta 15 minutos que pueden ser subidos a través de cualquier medio, o enviados por correo electrónico, para formar parte del evento".

El Festival programará también una serie de talleres gratuitos en toda Santa Lucía, a través de los cuales los participantes podrán familiarizarse con todos los aspectos de la realización cinematográfica, incluyendo actuación, iluminación y escritura de guion.

Since its inception five years ago, it’s popularity has traversed local boundaries, piquing the interest of young filmmakers in the wider Caribbean.

Colin Weekes, founder and director of the festival, said participation has grown from local to regional with an abundance of interest from the youth of the Eastern Caribbean and beyond.

“The festival is now open to the Caribbean and more people are aware of it and are participating, and it shows you the strength and eagerness that budding artistes have, and the potential for this industry to grow,” Mr Weekes said. “We do not have any problems in respect to people wanting to participate, infact we may well be a little too slow, but its important to take things in stride, and that’s what we are doing. We want to ensure that we have a solid foundation, and that we are not influxed with activities that we can not handle.”

Mr Weekes said the process for entering the festival is simple.

“It has always been a free festival so that everybody can be exposed. The rules are easy. Technology is at our finger tips and we want the youth to use it in a positive way, so it can be via the use of a phone or DSLR camera. Applicants will make a film no longer than 15 minutes, upload it through any medium or send it via email, and voila, you are part of the festival.”

As part of the festival, a range of free workshops will be held throughout Saint Lucia where participants can become acquainted with all aspects of film making, including acting, lighting and screen writing.
