El Festival de Cine de Trinidad + Tobago (ttff)  se ha asociado con la National Gas Company  (NGC) en la creación de un programa de desarrollo cinematográfico de tres años, Shooting Stars (Estrellas Emergentes), dirigido a alumnos de secundaria básica del país caribeño. El proyecto forma parte de los esfuerzos para apoyar y desarrollar una industria cinematográfica nacional.

El Festival de Cine Trinidad + Tobago (ttff) celebra películas de y sobre el Caribe y su diáspora, así como del cine mundial, a través de un festival anual y proyecciones durante todo el año. Además, la ttff busca facilitar el crecimiento del cine caribeño al ofrecer un amplio programa de la industria y oportunidades de redes.

Cuatro escuelas secundarias en toda Trinidad y Tobago han sido seleccionadas para participar en el programa: En el lanzamiento, Myles Lewis, Directora Corporativa de NGC, señaló que junto al ttff comparte objetivos similares para desarrollar el potencial humano de las industrias creativas. Lewis Instó a los estudiantes matriculados a cambiar el enfoque de la cámara de los selfies a una perspectiva diferente, como una forma de autodescubrimiento y desarrollo.

La Fase Uno de Shooting Stars está orientada al desarrollo cinematográfico, la gestión de proyectos, la formación de redes y desarrollo de capacidades de negociación. Además, participarán especialistas y expertos en temas sociales, ambientales, económicos y otros, seleccionados por las escuelas para realizar talleres, lo que facilitará una comprensión más profunda del tema. Al final de esta fase, se pedirá a las escuelas que produzcan una película de entre cinco y diez minutos sobre un desafío o problema importante que afecte a sus centros estudiantiles.

Se espera que los estudiantes que participan durante dos años en el programa obtengan habilidades de escritura de guion y creación cinematográfica; mientras que los estudiante que participen durante los tres años, podrán terminar el programa con habilidades especializadas y un nivel de competencia que puede llevarlos a la educación terciaria en cine o a una  temprana carreraen en televisión o producción cinematográfica.

Para muchos jóvenes, ello les brindará la oportunidad de entrar en una profesión que de otra manera no habría estado abierta a ellos.

Al final de la Fase Uno, las cuatro películas producidas por cada escuela se estrenarán durante ttff / 2019 y competirán por el Premio NGC Shooting Stars a la Mejor Película. También habrá premios por Actuación, Dirección, Edición, Diseño de sonido y vestuario, y Diseño de arte, entre otros.

Estas películas también se presentarán en otras escuelas del país a través de una gira nacional en septiembre de 2019.

As part of ongoing efforts to support and develop a national film industry, The National Gas Company of Trinidad and Tobago Limited (NGC) has partnered with the  trinidad+tobago film festival (ttff) has on a three-year film development programme, ‘Shooting Stars’, for secondary school students.

The trinidad+tobago film festival (ttff) celebrates films from and about the Caribbean and its diaspora, as well as from world cinema, through an annual festival and year-round screenings. In addition, the ttff seeks to facilitate the growth of Caribbean cinema by offering a wide-ranging industry programme and networking opportunities.

"Shooting Stars" was launched on Friday, November 2 November at the VIP Room, Movie Towne, Port of Spain.

Four secondary schools throughout Trinidad and Tobago have been selected to participate in the programme:

-San Juan North Secondary

-Couva East Secondary

-Holy Faith Convent, Penal

-Signal Hill Secondary School, Tobago

At the launch, Myles Lewis, NGC’s Head, Corporate Social Responsibility, noted both NGC and the ttff shared similar goals of building on human capacity in the creative industry.  He urged the students attending to shift the camera’s focus from selfies to another perspective as a way of self-discovery and development.

Phase One of Shooting Stars is aimed at developing filmmaking, project management, team-building, and negotiation skills. In addition, specialists and experts in social/environmental/economic or other issues selected by the schools will be provided to conduct workshops, facilitating a deeper understanding of the selected subject matter. The schools will then be called on to produce a five to ten-minute film on a major challenge or issue impacting their school.

Through experiential learning and mentors, students will develop both professional filmmaking and transferable life skills that will impact their socio-cultural development for the long term. It is envisioned that students participating in any one year will gain proficiency in project management, time planning, and basic filmmaking skills.

Students participating in two years of the programme will hopefully gain more in-depth scriptwriting and filmmaking skills; while those participating over the three years will likely leave the programme with specialist skills and a level of proficiency that can take them to tertiary level education in filmmaking or an early career in TV or film production.

For many young people, this will provide an opportunity to enter a profession that might not otherwise have been open to them.

At the end of Phase One, the four films will be premiered during ttff/19 and will compete for the NGC Shooting Stars Award for Best Film. There will also be prizes for Acting, Directing, Editing, Sound Design and Costume, and Art Design among others. These films will also be shared with other schools via a national tour in September 2019.
