ENTREVISTA

    The erratic trip towardd parenthood
    By Robert Andrés Gómez

With El abrazo partido, Daniel Burman (Buenos Aires), quickly broke with the generation of Argentine film directors. After feature films of relative success as Un crisantemo estalla en cincoesquinas or Todas las azafatas van al cielo, Burman went to Berlin Film Festival with El abrazo partido, a film that talked about the reunion of a  father who had been absent a long time ago and his son who resisted the reunion. In this interview, the director talks about this film, and other subjects which are present in his filmography.

A couple of years later, in Derecho de familia, Burman uses  the same actor (Hendler), to  deal again with the paternity subject,  this time from the point of view of a man in  his thirties, who examines the path of his life and see in his father the  path he must  follow from this moment on. His first balance is frightening. Everything happens in the  Argentina of the time, filtered by Burman s Jewish heritage that reveals his world and life experience.

With a conventional marriage with the girl of his dreams, a son to raise and a father who see him as his own perpetuation, Burman shoots an urban family drama with considerable dose of black and a little bit candid humor which shape a chronicle about the existential dilemmas of a simple and warm life.

    - Derecho de familia is perhaps the most masculine films of all his philmography.
Yes, and it is very curious that this attracts so much the attention. In some festival screenings more than a woman pointed out that to me, almost as a sin. I always respond the same. Anybody would imagine  to remark to Jane Campion "¡Hey, you always talk about women! What happens with the men? ". I find licit and necessary a reflection about the masculine in relation with parenthood and the family relationships. In the film environment of the last years, the subject of love between men has been the exclusive patrimony of the gay-theme films. In my film I explore how we men relate ourselves with our parents, with our children, without underestimating the feminine. On the contrary, if you see my films, women are fixed points of reference who allow the masculine characters to doubt,  to go and return...

    - You have been also criticized by your view of the Argentine Jewish world.
    - My view is not to the Jewish elements but from "the Jewish element” point of view. I do not know very well what thing are Jewish, because I never was another thing that an  Argentine man and a Jew. Both things are part of my essence and my identity and they  pervade all my stories and also impose a point of view.

    - The main character is in a crossroad. He dislikes the life that he got or it did not turned out as he expected.
    - He is in a very particular point. He should assume the definitive adulthood. To live parenthood as his own and no as a reflection. He has to decide if he is going to become  definitively as his own father or follow another way. He finds difficult to come closer to his father because the idea of his father´s death or decadence approach him to his own adulthood.

    - Why does he find difficult to come closer to his father? Is it the fear to be like him?
    - It is a justified fear, he is afraid of discovering those small details join us, which are stronger than the apparent speeches that we use in order to establish our differences.

The trip of the main character in El abrazo partido was clearer. In this case, it is painted a whole world, with a character in the midle.
     - For me both passages are clear. One is closer to an initiation trip, his father's search and the assumption of his own identity. In Derecho de familia is the assumption of the own parenthod. They are successive and complementary processes.

    - You adore the voice over. The film acquires with it a stupendous report tone.
    - They are subjective trips where the point of view and the detail are essential. It is an excellent resource that allows to discover our hero's contradictions. The voice over   reflects what he thinks of himself and  his own world. But sometimes the film confronts him with another reality. The voice over works as a mirror for the spectator.

    - You have appeared in some takes of the film. Do you like to play to do cameos?
    - This fun, a playful moment, I enjoy putting myself for a moment in the actors´ position and remembering how difficult it is...

    - The look to the father-son relationship is very present in your two last films. ¿What comes next?
    - I am working in the topic of the “empty nest: what happens with a couple when their  children leave home and they should begin in a new way their life as a couple, now alone by themselves..

    - Does it continue being a crisis in Argentina to produce, direct and write a film at the same time ? Or is it in your case an obsession to do everything?
    - After five films, fulfilling these three roles. I feel it comfortable, natural and in accordance with my obsessive neurosis.
